Visio is good up to a certain point. For instance for deployment diagrams and some class & sequence diagrams. Since it's intended to serve in Microsoft world it does not support Java object model 100%. For instance, you can't assign StatelessSessionBean stereotype to a class.
I am going through it myself and looking for an alternative. Look at Eclipse.org for UML2 project. See if it's any better.

"Victor A.", you have previously been warned on one or more occasions regarding adjusting your display name to meet JavaRanch standards. This is not optional. Please take a look at the JavaRanch Naming Policy and adjust your display name to match it prior to your next post.

Your display name must be a first and a last name separated by a space character, and must not be obviously fictitious.

Be aware that accounts with invalid display names are disabled.

I used Visio to draw all diagrams as well.
If you are using UML 1.x, it is pretty good.
If you are using UML 2.0, you have to install add-ons to Visio in order to draw diagrams.

Avoid Visio at all costs.

If you have a computer with Visio installed on it, pull the plug and run as fast as possible to the nearest fallout shelter.

There are many, many, MANY open source UML projects that are available free of charge that work much better than Visio.

Do a Google search for "UML Tools" and you'll see. Download a couple of them, see which one you like best and use it.

What is that? Is that a mongol hoarde? Can we fend them off with this tiny ad?
