I am planning to take the SCEA exam/s.

Will taking JEE 5 essentially also cover J2EE topics?

Is there a point in taking J2EE SCEA instead of waiting and taking the JEE 5 SCEA - assuming I can wait?

I doubt if you can wait. Sun has only recently finished gathering the people required to start work on the questions. I think it should be another year atleast before they are out with the exam.

As for the part about J2EE Vs J2EE5, I would agree that waiting for the next SCEA might expose you to a few topics more like EJB3. However SCEA part 2 - the assignment would still be as challenging as it is today. You are free to use any J2EE technology for part II and you should wait only if you feel taking a different part I exam is worth it.

I am not sure if "taking a different part I is worth it", but taking (studying for) the current part I of the exam, to me, is definitely not worth it!

Why not? Only a small part deals with the specifics of EJB, the remaining will not change: Protocols, UML, patterns, legacy integration doesn't seem to need any change for JEE 5

There is still a sea of knowledge and preparation required for part I. I agree that it can still be expanded more but I think the current part I exam still holds good in most areas.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
