I referred both the books for my SCEA PartI and if somebody wants to choose from the above two books for a quick learning, I will go with Head First Design pattern.

I have refered head first.I would advice you to refer the core java patterns by deepak alur. This was the book that helped me to understand design patterns in a more detail.

I recommend GoF, because HFDF don't cover all GoF design patterns.

SCJA 1.0, SCJP 1.4, SCWCD 1.4, SCBCD 1.3, SCJP 5.0, SCEA 5, SCBCD 5; OCUP - Fundamental, Intermediate and Advanced; IBM Certified Solution Designer - OOAD, vUML 2; SpringSource Certified Spring Professional

I recommend "Design Pattern In Java" for part one, and than Core J2EE pattern for part 2 and 3.
