Dear all,

I am just about to start preparing myselft for the SCEA exams and currently studying for the SCEA part 1. Would the forum advice waiting for the J2EE 5 based SCEA part 1 or go ahead with the current one.

Many thanks in advance

Normally, I'd say just go ahead and take it, but as SCEA for Java EE 5 should be out in February or March, you might want to wait.

Recommend to wait and take the new one.

Hi Ambrose,

I found myself asking the same question as your asking now. I personally can't just sit around waiting for the new exam to appear. So I figure, why not just prepare for the current one, take it, and then in a near future do the update exam. This way you'll also have knowledge on older J2EE systems.

My 2 cents.

Setting aside, of course, that I did the Beta... there's been nothing solid yet from Sun that there will be an upgrade or what it will entail. (As I mentioned in another thread, the response I received from Sun/Prometric was that they have usually had one in the past, but they have not yet announced how they're going to handle it.) I don't think, given the amount of effort that it takes to do the SCEA, that it's really reasonable to look at doing the current and then upgrade when the new one is probably only two months away at most. Especially since the exams all seem to have gone up in price again.

Just my own two cents.

Although you may have a slight point there, I personally don't see it a waste of time to go for the current exam, given that the point of the exams are to learn and prove your knowledge on a certain subject - and not to prove that you are up to date with the latest exams.

Look at the differences in objectives of both the exams. I don't remember the differences between current objectives and beta objectives but I know that there are differences. Which objectives do you like better?

Another way to look at it would be to look at your current project/employment. Is it based on old or new J2EE? Do you expect it to change any time soon? Does the new exam help you do a better job at what you do today or do you really need to learn the old stuff because that's what you are working on now?

I would say start preparing on common topics between old and new exams. If by the time you are done preparing, the new exam is available, go for it otherwise think about this decision again at that time.

I saw many reply to this topic. I also want to add few thing to this question. It would not be an answer. Its again a question an extension to current one.

We know that after Sun release the new version of the SCEA it will take at least another one year to release a recommended (or exam targeted) book.

So, Would the forum advice waiting for the J2EE 5 based SCEA part 1 or go ahead with the current one.

Even if a focussed book is not available, you should be able to prepare for the exam using specifications (they are not that hard to read), Java EE tutorial, articles etc. If you have study material for the old exam, it should still be useful for the new exam e.g. design patterns etc. Are you dependent on an exam focussed book to prepare? If yes, then you either need to wait for a long time or go for the old exam.

As an architect, you will come across many problems for which you will find no book.

Yes,

You are 100% correct. But what I expect form a exam focus book is clearly pointed objectives.

Anyway I decided to study on the old one and when I finish the study for SCEA sun release the SCEA 5.0, I will do it else do the current one and later do the upgrade exam.

Thanks

I hope there is an upgrade plan from Sun Educantional Services for those with SCEA for J2EE

Billy ,

It's not clear what to upgrade....

From what I read on this forum - old assignment allows to use JEE 5.0 for Part 2,3.

The only real difference is - Part 1 (i.e. EJB 1.1 vs EJB 3.0, etc, etc,.)

Would it mean re-taking just Part 1 would upgrade current SCEA to SCEA 5.0 ?

It's not fair , IMHO
(and it would not reflect JEE 5.0 knowledge, since in old exam Part 2,3 people might use pre JEE 5.0 versions).

Is there "upgrade" exam for SCJD (which icludes assignment too) ?

It's hard to tell whether SCEA upgrade exam will ever be released.

I may be wrong...

regards,
MZ

Being part of the "lucky ones" who were able to take both exams...

I also suggest to wait for the newer version of the exam.

Have you seen the objectives for SCEA 5 Beta? It might help you in deciding.

SCJP 1.2 (89%), SCWCD 1.3 (94%), IBM 486 (90%), SCJA Beta (96%), SCEA (91% / 77%), SCEA 5 P1 (77%), SCBCD 5 (85%)
