Any guidelines regarding what version of UML should be used for the assignment?

Also, if anyone has some information/links on differences between 1.3 and 2.0 I would like to know.

There's no specific UML version for part 2. Use whatever version your favorite UML tool supports.

The key is to have readable designs that properly express the ideas you have. The UML version is less important than your ability to express your ideas graphically.
