Objects and DAO pattern

I normally see that DAO's work with Transfer Objects rather than Business Objects. If we have a Business(Domain?) Object Model, and we are using DAOs for persistance, how do these two relate.
Even in Cade's case study, they have shown an Object Model, however their DAO's return Value Objects. Is the object model only at a conceptual level?

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
