The Instructions document states that the Frequent Flyer system (FFS) tracks the mileage earned and used. Now, who/which application is going to update the FFS. Can we assume that the FFS gets updated through some other means ?

You can make assumptions about some data. Make sure that your assumptions do not invalidate themselves when other parts of the system may interact with your assumptions.
