Hi everybody.

Talking about prerequisites for the certifications, don't you think that the SCEA should have at least SCJA as prerequisite??

Or why do you think Sun didn't set a prerequisite for SCEA??

All SCEA's I know have SCJP certification and often SCWCD too.

In my opinion to become a SCEA, you must have the knoledge of SCJP, that's why I'm concerned about it.

Hi Alonso,

I think that, in Sun's idea, an architect doesn't need to code or even know how to code. He designs.

In my opinion, an architect that doesn't have any coding experience is an "Ivory tower architect" and that kind of architects are not very credible.

Sun partitions their certifications on role - the role of an architect to them doesn't require knowing how to program, but is solely a designer.

That said... I think the reasons that most of the SCEA's you see have a lower-level Java cert as well are because a) Most folks become an architect after being a programmer, and b) Exactly as has been said, it helps to actually know more of the underlying technology (perhaps to better appreciate where to use the various pieces) to successfully design software solutions.

Couldn't agree more but people who come from coding background should have the ability to look at the big picture. Some find it very difficult to do this.

There is no guarantee that a good developer could be a good architect, but it is hard for an architect do his job well if he does not have code experience.

It is possible that an SCEA does not have java code experience but has some CGI, PHP or .Net coding experience.

I actually think the SCJA exam is a great primer for SCEA. Many of the requisites on the Java Associate exam are reflected in the SCEA JEE5 architect exam. I really think having the SCJA can only help you in this regard.

I agree with you Cameron.

The SCJA could help a lot for the SCEA cert.

SCEA contains all topics of SCJA, except the ones for Micro Edition (J2ME).

And that's why I think it must be a prerequisite.

SCJA, SCJP 1.4/6, SCWCD 1.4
