SCWCD or SCBCD ... pls help !!!

Hello friends,
I am planning to give both SCWCD and SCBCD. However I just learnt that a newer version of SCWCD will be out by March 2004. Also SCBCD has just been launched in Sept 2003. I have been out of touch with java and want to give the certs both for knowledge and job point of view.
Which one do I give first ??? Is it worth giving the SCWCD now, or waiting until March?

Karen.

SCBCD is a very focused exam. If you are comfortable with EJB 2.0 specs plus go through Head First EJB, you would be very well prepared for the exam. And SCBCD is here to stay - at least for 12 months or so.
New version of SCWCD will most likely cover new versions of Servlets and JSP specs. Unless you are comfortable reading specs, you would not be able to get ready for the exam for a few months after introduction. Please note that SCBCD was introduced late August and the first book is just coming out now.
One tempting option for the new version of any exam is becoming a beta tester and get certified at zero or negligible cost.
We had an extremely vibrant SCBCD beta community helped by great great K & B.
Hope this would help you decide.
Best wishes.

Hi Giri,
Guess you are right. I did attempt the SCBCD beta but being new at J2EE then, didnt clear the test. However I must admit that having read the specs once did teach me a lot. Guess I'll wait for the SCWCD beta and meanwhile concentrate on SCBCD.
Thanks

Hi Karen,
It all depends as to in which part you want to show your competency and prove your skills in . Both SCWCD and SCBCD deals with server side java and i guess you should have both. Iam already a SCWCD but i have worked more in EJB than in JSP, Servlets so i think it all depends upon what sort of work you r doing and how comfortable you are .
But logically speaking you should first take SCWCD.

Rishi,
Yeah I have more exposure to JSP and Servlets. Also done one project in developing EJBs abt 2 yrs ago. If its going to be SCWCD, current version I should be able to prepare in abt a month dedicated full time. Except for Design Patterns, I am fine with SCWCD. I can rate myself 6/10 on JSP, servlets and 5/10 on EJB. So u see, i don start from scratch in either case.
I am also looking for a job and hence need to know which one is a safer bet these days. Also considering the fact that the beta for SCWCD will be out in March (probably), I'll also be saving myself a few bucks by giving the beta later.
I just gave the beta for SCBCD and most of the spec is kind of covered. HF EJB should now help me bridge the gap for the exam.
So I guess giving the SCBCD sounds like a better idea for now. Whatta say???

Hi Karen,
I think we are in the same boat, which is heading to the islands of SCWCD and SCBCD... As for me, I am waiting for the new version of SCWCD, meanwhile I'm reading EJB Spec for SCBCD and JSP2 & Servlet2.4 Specs for SCWCD too... It's kinda boring to read technical spec, which are not user-friendly... But I have to paddle the boat in such a thunder-storm...
But I feel like I can reach both of the islands...

hi Billy
I think so, but new version of SCWCD promise to be harder (IMHO)

Oh Karen... I think we have common problem like passengers in the boat... As for me, I am going to the island of SCWCD first and then to that of SCBCD... I just feel that I am quite confident for SCWCD and waiting for the new version to come up.... Meanwhile I am heading towards SCBCD so that after I finish the new version of SCWCD, I can go for SCBCD in no time...
Since you are going to the island of SCBCD first, I'll be on the boat with you till the pier... But I will not step on the island... I'll drop you at the island of SCBCD and head to the island of new SCWCD... After then I'll come back to you at SCBCD island...
Just would like to have fun...

I have done the SCWCD and it gives good and solid base knowledge about Servlet and JSP apis. SCBCD is also a good cert. and I will also do it someday, but with ..WCD I have very good knowledge about the client and middle tier J2EE stuff. That is true that ...WCD is easy, but you can have to goals....either pass the cert or pass the cert and learn something.

As I understand it, SCWD is a fairly quick certification to get. There's a couple of good books out there and it doesn't take long to memorize what's needed.
SCBD however is a longer processso, I guess it depends on how long you have and what your goal is.

Like Tero said, I think there is some diference between "Just pass the exam" and "Learn things and Pass the exam"... Preparing for the first one should take no long and pretty quick... But if we only focus on just passing the exam by memorizing things... What's the point to get certified?
People who get certified by approaching the second method is the real guy... They are worth to hire... But there are many people out there using the first approach.. I don't want to be in that group...

I really do not think that one could memorise and pass Suns Exams. You sure know the Exams are designed by experts in the field who took all these into consideration why designing the Exams, plus they took into consideration the fact that one is supposed to have some practical knowledge before passing the exam. If you see anyone who pased the exam withine a very small period of time that is because she/he has been doing or had done things related to the content of the exam in the past and so did not have to do a lot of programming any more rather focussed attntion on the nitty gritty details about the Exam.
