I download and install J2EE 1.3(Sun Appserver 7) to study Head First EJB book. But I can't find any deploytool in that server.

I am really in dilemma.
Please tell me which one i download to study HF EJB book.
If possible, Please specify the link also.

Why are the book is not specifying about the server software?

The way EJB is implemented may differ from one server vendor to another. I think the authors' intention not to include a lot of details on server software is for you to focus on the EJB specification itself.

The exam does not include any vendor-specific question. The best resource for the software reference might be the server documentation itself and not the Head First book.

Good luck on your review!

Today i download j2sdkee-1_3_1-win.exe
Installed it. But its not working.
There is nothing displays in the programe files of the start menu, only readme.txt

Then i directly go to the installed directory and i try to run the j2ee.bat file.
But nothing is happening.
I set PATH, CLASSPATH, JAVA_PATH,J2EE_PATH everything. But its not working.

How many SCBCD certified persons are here, but no one is telling me which server version i have to download to study the Head First EJB Book.

I mailed Kathy and Bert. No response.
I am really disappointed with this forum.

From the Helpful notes from the authors that Vivek mentioned above:

Head First EJB - tips
---------------------

Some readers have said that they are having trouble finding the J2EE 1.3 RI we use in
the book (and that is the version they need for the exam).

If people have trouble navigating to it (Sun has gone out of their way now to make it
hard to find), they can go to the download page at:

http://java.sun.com/j2ee/sdk_1.3/

And download the 1.3.1 FCS (and NOT the SunOne Application Server).

They should *not* use any J2EE 1.4 version -- the exam is based on 1.3 only.

Show us how you set "PATH, CLASSPATH, JAVA_PATH,J2EE_PATH everything" and then the actual output when you run j2ee.bat. Please copy/paste from your command window rather than typing what you remember into a post.

I was composing the follow up response with suggestions on the problem running the server when you post this one insulting me. At least that is the way I interpret it. If you calm down and be nice people will be more likely to try to help you.

My installation path is I:\j2sdkee1.3.1

PATH = (java path);I:\j2sdkee1.3.1\bin
CLASSPATH = (java class path);I:\j2sdkee1.3.1\lib\j2ee.jar
JAVA_HOME = (java home)
J2EE_HOME = I:\j2sdkee1.3.1

after setting the environment variables i try to run the command j2ee
through command prompt. But it says "not recognised as an internal or external command". I tryied j2ee.bat also. Same result

Then i directly went to the bin directory and try to execute the j2ee.bat file but nothing happening. Command window just starts and close.

I already told you that there is only displays in Start menu -> All programmes -> Java 2 SDK Enterprise Edition v1.3.1 -> readme.txt

Is this the output from a set command? Does the stuff in parens really look like that or was that just to simplify the output?

It sounds like there is a problem with your path since it cannot find j2ee or j2ee.bat, assuming they are in I:\j2sdkee1.3.1\bin.

Did you try running j2ee.bat from the bin directory in a command window. It's been ages since I did my original install and I don't have that machine to look at while answering this. It sounded like you tried running it from explorer and the window goes away and you don't get the see the error messages.

I apologize if I'm being dense, but I am trying to help.

Can you show me the output of running the following commands, preferably one at a time?

Here's what I got (don't have all those set and used a different directory to cd to and I don't have j2ee.bat on my machine):

No Carol Enderlin, you are using BEA server. Head First Book is using sun's j2ee server for the examples they are written.
For the easyness of the study i must use the same server. Thats why i am asking that how i can i download and cofigure the same server that the book is using.

it become 10 days i bought the book. But i could't start even a chapter.
Its really horrible. I lost my money and my peaceful mind.
Kathy and Bert keep silent and smiling. I mailed them but they are not responding to me.

I installed a new copy of windows for SCBCD 1.3 . But ..

You are not paying attention. I said I don't have it installed on this machine. I installed it on my home machine maybe a year ago and got it working.

Carol Enderlin, leave the environment variables.

I told you that, i directly try to run the j2ee.bat file. But its not working.

My doubt is, the file i downloaded is correct or not.
What all will come into the start->all programs->Java 2 SDK Enterprise Edition v1.3.1 shortcut?

Sreeraj G H,

Please remember the one rule you agreed to follow when you registered for the Ranch:

Be Nice.

Your tone is most unpleasant. I realize you are frustrated, but Carol is being extremely kind and patient and I need you to treat her with as much respect as you can muster, please. Everyone here who answers a question does so out of the kindness of their heart, and for no other reason. If you are abusive, no one will want to help you.

Now, my two cents about your problem: the J2EE RI needs those environment variables to be set to function properly. I know that you set them in the control panel, but it doesn't appear that they're showing up in the command window -- look at the output of the "set" commands above -- there's no mention of the J2EE install directory. This is why the j2ee.bat won't work, even if you run it from the current directory.

When you change environment variables in the control panel in Windows, the changes are not propagated to existing processes. To see the new values in a command prompt, you must close the window and open a new one. Have you done that? If not, please do so. If you have, well, then you need to try to figure out why the changes you say you made do not appear.

I'll leave the environment variables and running j2ee.bat from the bin directory in a command window when you prove me wrong by showing the detailed output.

I don't remember there being anything in the start - all programs - etc. I ran everything from the command line.

Now what I do when this kind of thing happens to me is open up j2ee.bat in an editor and take a look at what it is doing. Trace it through and figure out where something is going wrong. If you modify it, be sure to make a backup copy so you don't need to reinstall. If it is using the start command (e.g. start xyz.bat) to open another window and that one is failing and disappearing so you don't see what went wrong you could try temporarily removing the start from the command to see the output.

Thank you Carol Enderlin, you tried to help me a lot.

I asked some simple questions.
1) j2sdkee-1_3_1-win.exe is this the correct setup file?
2) After you run the setup and install will anything appear in the start menu other than readme.txt?
3) If not, from where i can find the correct setup file?

I believe Carol has answered those, several times. The answers are 1) yes, and 2) no.

It's very hard to help because you won't answer any questions, tell us what you actually did, or tell us what happens when you try the things we suggest.

SO...

After you set the environment variables in the control panel (you told us you did, right?) did you then close all your Command Prompt windows and open a new one to work in?

I used to has the similar problem to you and now I can solve it.

PATH = (java path);I:\j2sdkee1.3.1\bin
CLASSPATH = (java class path);I:\j2sdkee1.3.1\lib\j2ee.jar
JAVA_HOME = (java home)
J2EE_HOME = I:\j2sdkee1.3.1

I don't know what you mean about '(java path);' or '(java class path);'. The variable environment is not remember something between (..).

And your question

1) j2sdkee-1_3_1-win.exe is this the correct setup file?
YES
2) After you run the setup and install will anything appear in the start menu other than readme.txt?
the start menu has only readme.txt, so nothing wrong
3) If not, from where i can find the correct setup file?
you may dissappoint but if you want to setup it nothing relate to 'j2ee.bat'. It you must set PATH, CLASSPATH etc. correctly.
--------------------
I assume you set that environment correctly.

I have question to ask:
Please give the REALLLLLLL PATH, CLASSPATH, JAVA_HOME, J2EE_HOME, that you type in My Computer>Properties>Advanced>Environment Variables.

In that dialog has to listbox:
first: User variable for User (this list box is contains CLASSPATH, JAVA_HOME, J2EE_HOME)
second: system variable (this list box is contains PATH)

Continue...

First thing you must remember; DON'T USE j2se5.0, because it not compatible on some feature. So use j2se2.0 is good for your emotion.

If you think you set the variable environble correctly let start.
1. start Command line by Start>Run and type CMD.
2. start cloudscape database(java build in DB) by typing cloudscape -start (this is only step that the book not mention.)

Wait a minute... before we go to step 3

If you get error response such as 'cloudscape' is not recognized... blah blah blah. It has two case ploblems that you must consider.

First case: If response is show message something about 'cloudscape' is not re.... You can sure that you must set somewhere in environment variable wrong, especially in PATH.

Second case: If response is show message somethig about 'C:\program' is not re.... This problem is not relate to environment variable but to version of your j2se.

NOW let go back to the step 3
3. from the step 2 (if it run correctly). The first command window has no prompt anymore so use can type anything in it. You must start another command window.
4. In the new command window, start j2eeRI server by typing: j2ee -verbose (so j2ee is use for this purpose). And again this command window has no prompt you must start another command window.
5. now you can go in to the deploytools. Let joy with the HFEJB.

Thank you very much Tanakorn Numrubpor

Actually i decided to avoid studying HF EJB after i am failed to configure the
server.So i uninstall the j2ee 1.3 server and deleted the setup file also.

But now, when i see your response i decided to install it again.
I have to download the setup again.

The server configuration steps you mentioned here seems perfect.

I am going to download the server now.

I have one doubt, is it compulsory that i have to use only jdk 1.2.
Is not true that every code compiled in jdk 1.2 will compile in jdk 1.5 also?

I am going to download j2ee 1.3 now. I will download jdk 1.2 anly after from your response.

Thanks once again Tanakorn Numrubpor.

j2se 2.0 don't mean only j2se 1.2 but it is also j2se1.3.1 and j2se1.4.2 these jdk versions is can call j2se2.0(sorry for my unclear post).

actually,I mean you can't use only j2se5.0(in fact j2se 1.5.0) with j2eeRI 1.3.1. And I also have one question to whoever come to see this post, why we can't use j2se5.0 with j2eeRI1.3.1.? My teacher told me that it something about the version of cloudscape database. Does it right assumtion?

jdk 1.2 is obsolete version.J2SE 2.0 was never released.Both of you clarify this.further if you are working on SCBCD 1.3 you need the said server.No point in deleting the setup and/or installation.

Often backward compatiability is supported rather than forward compatibility.
If you compile with j2se 5.0 it will create code which has additional code which will not be recognized by older versions.
