I assure that about greater than 70% of this forum member is use your book (HFEJB) for SCBCD preparation. I was took a tour for this forum and I see multiple topic point to something identically. That thing is chapter1 detail. I'm sure that the chapter is contain usefuls stuff and multiple tool s to make our brain fresh while read it.

But something about little sentence in your book on page 28 that said "...The only thing we won't do is install and configure the server. We assume you already did that..." . I think this speech is make me (and many person) have a problem, so your assumption was not quite right.

When I took this book I have on idea about what ejb is for.?, what is it.? I only know it is java relate technology and this subject was write by you (Kathy & Bert) so I think it have to useful for my career and my dream about java programmer because you write. We believe in your knowledge and teaching technic.

I want to sent my two requests to you.
First: please posts the process for setup j2eeRI server in step by step style and don't assume that people who take this book is know about setting variable environment(in popular platform). I think your style is not assume the 'already know' for reader but is the 'does not know' style, so please take my request.

Second: I apologize if you already post this topic. And I beg you to insert this detail in your next edition of your HFEJB.

Thank you for your great book, it make multiple programmers around the world happy. I love the series that you both founding. I'm thai, and in thailand the foreign computer textbook is not quite popular because the price and language reason. But I think your book series is make me surprise I already own Head First OOAD and you know? I'm not ever see something like that. The book store that I frequency go to buy is stock your series about 20 for HEAD FIRST series on shelf ,not count on that stock in their warehouse. So I think the above sentence that I just say will also be the problem to future HFEJB reader. So I beg your apologize again for rudeness.

Sincerely
Tanakorn

Ahhh but for which platform and for what environment ? Installing the thing is actually a breeze. I am quite amazed that they made EJB 2.0 sound interesting ! Hats off indeed. Bert if you are planning to release a head first book for EJB 3.0 I ll buy it with my eyes closed. Good work.

Tanakorn,

I believe Kathy and Bert are using Macs (Mac OS) and most (?) people over here use PC (Windows). So, if Kathy writes how to install J2EE RI server on Mac OS - will this make you happy ? That's the reason they are trying to mention as less platform-dependent details as possible. There was some problem even with classpath environment variables - they wrote in Mac OS (UNIX) style and people here get confused, since they tried to do this on Windows (on Windows ';' character separator is used, on *NIX ':')

regards,
MZ

Hi Guys,

Indeed, we don't want to get caught up in trying to support multiple target OSes and on top of that multiple versions of Sun servers!

I'd be interested in hearing other authors comment on this, but we find that we have to be very careful about what we put in our books. Every page takes time to create. We know that configuring environment variables and classpaths can be confusing - that's why we added that topic to the new SCJP 5.0 exam But we made the decision that if you're an SCJP studying for your SCBCD or your SCWCD, you'll be able to figure out how to get your environment set up.

That way, we were able to focus more energy on the topics that we considered more important.

I will say however, that in HF Java, we should have done more to help beginners set up their environments, and in the next edition of HF Java we plan to beef up that whole area.

As far as a new version of the EJB book goes, frankly we're still on the fence. We're waiting to see how the beta goes in terms of popularity, and we're kind of watching how the new version is embraced by the community. Unfortunately, of all our books, HF EJB has sold the fewest copies. When we decide to write a book, it's a big committment and risk for us - so we want to feel pretty sure that we'll sell enough copies to make a decent return on our time investment.

For example, we've said for several years that we would LOVE to write a J2ME book, but we keep thinking the time is not right yet.

The one thing that I can say for sure is that as soon as we make our decision, we will let everyone hear at the ranch know right away.

hth,

Bert
