Hi

So finally I also writing this mail . 2 days back I cleared SCBCD J2EE-5 with 90% and I am satisfied with my score(actually I find it way above my expectations). The exam was same as I had expected in terms of difficulty i.e. somewhere around 3 on a difficulty scale of 1(easy) to 5(Very difficult). This was a bit of a surprise as I had "easier than expected" experiences with SCJP and SCWCD.

Regarding my preparation, I would say it was not planned(in fact haphhazard), which resulted in myself taking much longer to prepare(arnd 8 months). Hence I would suggest that if you plan your preparation at the start, you can be much more efficient. I had no prior EJB experience which resulted in myself getting lost sometimes into un-necessary details and digressing from the objectives. The syllabus I think is more extensive as compared to other exams I gave earlier, this makes focussed study all the more important.

Actually I was initially preparing for SCBCD-1.3 and then changed my plans midway to write SCBCD-5. Then I started of with O.Reilly. EJB3 and Apress.Pro.EJB.3 basically to educate myself regarding EJB. Both are very good books, but ensure that you stay limited to the exam objectives. There are topics on which you need a superficial knowledge(like JNDI) etc. This I found somewhat difficult for my studying style a I usually get into the details. I think would not be a practical approach for the exam. Then I got hold of Mikalai Notes and to tell you the fact, they acted as my saviour for my SCBCD mission. The simple strategy I followed was to read the spec as pointed by Notes and then read the notes and then try it out practically if feasible. This helps in staying focussed on the exam objectives. It would not have been possible without the notes.
To add to this, I would say that it is better if you make your own notes while reading which you can revise before making the final dash(though I neaver made one due to my sheer laziness).

What's next??? Not made up my mind yet. Maybe I'll let my mind relax for sometime and then start afreash.

Cheers

Satya Maheshwari,

First of all congrats for your long journey(and patience).
Hope you got better picture SCBCD objectives.

Next Cert ???
I recommend you following two options for your next Quest:
1)IBM and major IT players they are now concentrating on SOA(Service Oriented Architecture), So you can go for "Web Services".

2)UML > Always the best option helps for one's vertical growth in any company.

Coming to your post:
Satya Maheshwari:There are topics on which you need a superficial knowledge(like JNDI) etc.

Please refer the source you have come across for JNDI.
I am very interested in knowing the actual functionality, how it is working.

Hi Satya
I got a question for you, I am currently working on Ejb2.1 I am planning to take SCBCD for this version. But I hear a lot about Ejb3, so what you think, which one I should go for? I started preapring for Ejb2 exam, is Ejb3 is harder thna Ejb2. Or is it better to take Ejb2 nowa nd later upgrade to Ejb3.
Thanks
Philip

Hi Philip
Even I had this dilemma of whether to go for Ejb2.1 or Ejb3 at the start. I decided to go for Ejb3 because of mainly these reasons:
1.ejb3 is the latest technology. Hence better to get certified in it.
2.I had no prior ejb experience, hence I thought if I have to start from scratch then why not ejb3 instead of first doing 2.1 and then moving to 3.
3.My job does not involve working on EJB technology, hence I had no compulsion to choose either of them.
I think, you would be in the best place to judge which one to go for. If your job requires ejb2.1 knowledge then you may go for that but I think that EJB3 is eventually going to replace 2.1 and you would have to learn it anyways.

is Ejb3 is harder thna Ejb2

I have some knowledge on 2.1 which I collected prior to starting on ejb3 and I feel ejb3 is more developer friendly and easier to learn. It has annotations, JPA , eliminates Entity beans, eliminates home/component bean interfaces and other features which great simplify things.

In summary I'll say, go for EJB3 if you do not have any other compulsion of going for 2.1

Hi Satya Thanks for the reply. I found it very diifcult to memmorise the methods which you can call from each state. But the unfortunae thing I am alsmost end of my study. Putting little more time to byheart those things. Do you think a going back and start Ejb3 is still possible. I am doing my certification on my oewn interest. Thanks Philip
