Hi all,
I passed the WCD exam this morning with an 88%, and I just wanted to pass along the following information from the front line:
Number of questions: 59
Score needed to pass: 61%
Duration: 90 minutes
I used the following resources to prepare:
Java Servlet Programming, 2ed
JavaServer Pages
Java Servlet 2.3 - Proposed Final Draft 2
JavaServer Pages 1.2 - Proposed Final Draft 2
Sun's $50 Practice Exam
Good Luck,

Congratulations! Thanks for the info. I have one question that would really help me gauge how much more I need to study.....How helpful was the practice test offered by sun? Did it reflect the difficulty level and scope of the exam?
Thanks,
Brandon

Hi Joe,
Congrats on becoming a SUN CERTIFIED WEB COMPONENT
DEVELOPER.That is very !!
I have planned to take up this exam on the first week og Sept.
Because you are one of the few who has been exposed to this
exam and also successful,i would like to ask you a few questions
1)What is the pattern of the exam?
I mean what types of questions do we get to face(Ex Objective
type,short answer type etc..)
2)What is the difficulty level compared to the SCJP exam?
3)Was the time sufficient to complete the exam?
I would be really thankful to you if you can answer these
queries.
Thanks and Congrats Once again,
Manjunath

I would also like to know how close the $50 mock exam from Sun was to the actual exam? Were there actual question from the mock on the exam?
Thanks

Here's my take:
I think that the resources provided by Sun are more than sufficient for passing this exam. In fact, here's my recommended study approach. If you're an SCJP and have a basic understanding of what Servlets and JSPs are, this approach should work for you.
- Copy the exam objectives and save them to disk.
- Download the Servlet 2.3 and JSP 1.2 specs.
- Using the specs, try to fill in each exam objective. The answers are usually obvious, and if you get stuck... that's what JavaRanch is for!
I found that the objectives were very representative of the questions that were on the actual exam. In fact, I don't remember any surprises at all.
Now, about the $50 sample exam. If you feel comfortable with the exam objectives, the sample exam is probably not necessary. However, it is very useful for clarifying the intent of an objective, if you are uncertain. The sample exam has at least one question for each sub-objective, and it points you to the specific section of the spec where the answer is found. Unfortunately though, there is only one exam, so you get the same questions each time you take it (dissapointing when it costs $50).
The 10 questions used in the free exam are taken directly from the sample exam. And these questions are very similar to the actual exam in format and difficulty. So, the sample exam is really not essential for success. But, if you have the $50 and want to feel a little more confident going in, go for it!
I hope this info is useful
Joe
