This week's book giveaway is in the OCAJP 8 forum. We're giving away four copies of OCA Java SE 8 Programmer I Study Guide and have Edward Finegan & Robert Liguori on-line! See this thread for details.
Good Morning, I have been programming in Java for 1 1/2 years and passed the Sun Certified Programmer exam in October (by the skin of my teeth). I came from a Cobol background. I am now interested in studying for the SCWCD exam. My department just purchased More Servlets & JSP by Marty Hall and I plan on either winning or purchasing the SCWCD Exam Study Kit. Does the exam strictly focus on the web component issues or are there questions on basic java fundamentals as well? Should I review the programmer material in addition to the web component material? Thank you in advance for your time. Pam
More Servlets & JSP by Marty Hall is an excellent book to help you understand most of the basic concepts of the Servlet and JSP. This book plus the Servlet/JSP spec plus this forum should be good enough to pass this SCWCD exam. Personally I don't think the SCWCD Exam Study Kit is a must. Of course if you have extra budget, it is always good to have more books. Good luck!

To expand on this thought, I believe it is good practice to obtain and go through the study guide written by the exam developers (in this case Sun Ed people). For instance, when I took the SJCP exam I bought and used the book from Roberts & Heller. Yes, it had its share of errata, as has been widely discussed and, yes, it might lean a tad to the easy side in terms of questions (so that wanna-be SCJPs don't get scared and skip the exam completely). However, it does reflect the exam philosophy and objectives better than any other book could, since the exam is in the authors's mind. I've read neither of the available books on SCWCD, for solely for the reason above, I would suggest that the Sybex book is not to be written off as a preparation book choice. Panagiotis
I have Marty Hall's "Core Servlet.." already. Should I get his second edition "More Servlet.."?
Core Servlet and JSP is free for download. I bought More Servlet and JSP because I wanted a printed book instead of a PDF. If I had the Core book in print, I wouldn't have purchased the More book because both books are almost the same on the servlet/JSP fundamentals (Core is a little more detailed though). I would just get the new material on servlet 2.3 and JSP 1.2 somewhere online. But that's just me [ July 17, 2002: Message edited by: Tybon Wu ]
