Hi Sairam, as such there is no specific book for the latest exam i.e. 1.4. You can use the 1.3 study guide by SCWCD book Hanumanth Deshmukh and Malvia.
Here's the info.
SCWCD Exam Study Kit: Java Web Component Developer Certification
by Hanumant Deshmukh, Jignesh Malavia, Jacquelyn Carter
If you want a specific book for the new certification, I guess you have to wait for K&B's new book. Here's the thread that should help you.
Head First SCWCD
Good Luck.

Hi Mikalai,
When will you finish your new study guide on SCJWSD?
In addition, I wanna ask, will you prepare PDF versions for your study guide?
Thanks.

Hi Shiram,
I feel the better thing to do is to wait for the HF Servlet and JSP book to be out. Definitely, will be a fun reading it!
Other guides will be Hanumant Deshmukh(which covers jsp 1.2) and Spec for Jsp 2.0, Servlet 2.4 and JSTL1.1. But reading from the spec, its difficult to get a very high score like 90s. Also, if you are reading from spec. then you need to try things out and explore yourself. Hope this helps.
Regards,
Vijay S

I think this opinion does not mean to everyone... Experienced persons or SCWCD 1.3 certified won't find it difficult to follow the JSP concepts in the specs, I guess...
Just wanna give some encouragement to those who are preparing for SCWCD 1.4 without the exam study guide...

You can always take the older version and then do the top up exam in the future.
I heard that the 1.4 exam is quite different in terms of the format of the questions etc (I haven't taken the beta).. therefore some 1.3 books "may not" be the best resource for passing.
Pls corerct me if I am wrong ranchers.

Agreed, if we have experienced developer giving, then they will be able to do much better. But dont think much people have actually worked on JSP 2.0 & JSTL. Servlet 2.4 hasnt changed much.
From the spec. they have provided the basic thing, how it needs to work. But in the exam, the question test that you have actually worked on it. Atleast some of the questions.
Anyway, part from the topics of the old exam, need to concentrate alot on the following:
1. Expression Language.
2. JSTL 1.1
3. Simple tag & classic tag creation
I found alot of questions on the above topics in the beta test, as compared to the older topics.
Regards,
Vijay S

Thanks all.

The info given is very useful.
I think i should take SCWCD 1.3 to get a clear understanding and score high. As there are good resources available.
Satish, do you think the book you have suggested (SCWCD Exam Study Kit: Java Web Component Developer Certification
by Hanumant Deshmukh, Jignesh Malavia, Jacquelyn Carter ) alone is enough for people like me who do not have any experience.
Please advice.
Thanks all, again for your valuable replies.

Cheers

Its upto you. You can do it either way. The approach in answering questions is different from the two versions. 1.3 version is more of the memory testing type and 1.4 is more of subject depth understanding type.

Satish, do you think the book you have suggested (SCWCD Exam Study Kit: Java Web Component Developer Certification

To pass with a reasonable score in the new version 1.4, I think if you are thorough with this book it is OK. But in JSP part there are many changes which are not dealt in the book, so may be you want to go for specs and prepare it.
If you want to take 1.3 with this book, its best. You can score as high as you want.

Thanks all, again for your valuable replies.

-sairam.

Good Luck.

HF Servlet and JSP is exam specific book only(But it can also be used as a reference after you complete the exam also because the quality of material provided by Bert & Kathy is very very good) and it covers all the objectives of the new exam 1.4.
Good Luck.
