Configuring Tomcat 5 on Win2K and Linux

Im using Win2K and Mandrake Linux 9.0. I have successfully installed Apache Tomcat 5 on both these Operating Systems. I have set the following environment variables appropriately:
1.PATH
2.CLASSPATH
3.JAVA_HOME
4.CATALINA_HOME

After this I tried to configure the invoker servlet. To enable the invoker servlet, I tried to uncomment the following servlet and servlet-mapping elements in install_dir/conf/web.xml.
<servlet>
<servlet-name>invoker</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>
org.apache.catalina.servlets.InvokerServlet
</servlet-class>
...
</servlet>

...

<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>invoker</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/servlet/*</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>

But there is no <servlet> tag available.

I can compile my servlet code and run JSP pages. But, whenever I try to run a servlet there is an error saying that default context / not found. How do I go about doing this?

In order to understand where the issue maybe, I have a couple of questions.

What do the log files indicate ?
What package name are you using in your servlet ?

For my 'test' stuff, I am using package com.example...
So a snipet of my web.xml would be:

[CODE]
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Session</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>com.example.Session</servlet-class>
</servlet>

...

<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>Session</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/session.do</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
[/CODE}

Hi Colin!!
Thanks for posting the message.
I want to make some points clear.

1. I'm not using any package for my servlets.
2. The web.xml file that you have indicated is the Deployment descriptor which every web app has one. But, the web.xml file that I have pointed out resides in the conf folder inside the Tomcat Inst. directory.

It seems like you by accident either comment out the default servlet mapping or delete it. Can you post your web.xml file here?

Can you post your CATALINA_HOME/conf/web.xml file ?

My <install_dir>/conf/web.xml file goes like this:

<!-- ==================== Default Welcome File List ===================== -->
<!-- When a request URI refers to a directory, the default servlet looks -->
<!-- for a "welcome file" within that directory and, if present, -->
<!-- to the corresponding resource URI for display. If no welcome file -->
<!-- is present, the default servlet either serves a directory listing, -->
<!-- or returns a 404 status, depending on how it is configured. -->
<!-- -->
<!-- If you define welcome files in your own application's web.xml -->
<!-- deployment descriptor, that list *replaces* the list configured -->
<!-- here, so be sure that you include any of the default values that -->
<!-- you wish to include. -->

<welcome-file-list>
<welcome-file>index.html</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>index.htm</welcome-file>
<welcome-file>index.jsp</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>

Please see if anybody can figure out any typo, although I can run my JSP code but unable to run servlets.

I compared your conf/web.xml file to mine and they are identical. I uncommented my servlet and servlet-mapping for the invoker and tried to use the http://localhost:8080/servlet/com.example.Movie, and it worked.

I had to copy the com.example.Movie.class file(s) to <install-dir>/common/classes and re-start Tomcat.

Hope it helps.
