First you figure out which forum is hosting the "giveaway" for the week. This week it is J2ME (Micro Edition).
Then you go to that forum and participate, either by asking questions or by answering questions.
Posts that are trivial or just say "I want to win" or "I agree" or whatever are thrown out. Posts by folks with display names that do not match JavaRanch's naming policyare thrown out.
It gets really irritating when folks just continue tacking on to the thread that Welcome the books Author - so start a new thread for a new topic.

Oh - at the end of the week (Friday morning) a utility is run (usually by Carl) that sorts through all of the posts in the target forum for the time span and randomly selects 10 posts.
The first 4 posts that are not thrown out get the book.
PS: We make Carl throw out his own posts too - just to be fair .

Just out of curiosity is anyone else thrown out of the race for the books, ie moderators, etc? Thanks.

Well - the author of course  .
But other than that - nope.
The moderators around here are all volunteers and donate alot of their time to JavaRanch, and if they happen to win a book now and then - well seems fair to me.
I, personally, won a book just month or so ago - and I LOVE it.
Since it is just luck, there are a few of our Ranch Hands that have won what seems to be "more than their fair share". But random drawings sometimes just work out that way. The ones that have done that have been heavy participators, so . . . seems fair to me.

Plus the moderators generally have to do a lot of extra work when a giveaway occurs in their forum, handling the increase in off-topic posts and illegal names from people who can't read instructions. Occasionally they have time to answer legitimate questions as well. If they happen to get rewarded by the luck of the draw, great.
