Please don't refresh signatures!

My signature is a snap-shot of the state of my mind, at the time of posting. Ten years from now, when I dig up an old post, I want to know what I was thinking. (Or in the case of more serious signatures, one could reminiscence about what their certifications were, or what they were doing).
But, now, with the current settings, changing my signature refreshs the signature on all my previous posts. Can this be prevented?

Not sure it can be prevented, but you can use "surrogate signature" instead. I often change signatures to add something to one particular post, so I do not have a signature per se, but cut&paste them

Of course, you can always just change ID's again whenever you change signatures.
I just confirmed that Jive works (about) the same as UBB in this respect. Not sure how easy it would be to change this, or whether there's sufficient incentive. Difficulty aside, does anyone see a reason signatures should change? In Jive I suppose it takes less storage space - the sig probably isn't actually stored for old posts; it just references the user's current sig. Might be worth looking into once we've moved over to Jive and more pressing issues are addressed.

Well I don't really like "signatures" at all. What's the point in using up bandwidth and storage saying the same thing over and over again?
In the older UBB version we used to use, you had to explicitly include a sig whenever you wanted one, an it was effectively just a simple way of doing a cut-and-paste. It should be easy enough to do that in Jive if people want it.
In the meanwhile, the only answer is to use cut-and-paste yourself.

I am sure some ranchers would prefer to have the signature refresh automatically in all of their posts. So either way, we will have a percentage of the ranchers who disagree.

That is an interesting name. Just in case, others are wondering what it is. It means "Why do you need my name ?" in one of the South Indian languages.

I'm with Frank on this one. A history of signature lines seems like a waste of effort to me. If you can't be bothered to fake it, why should it be hacked in?

On the Jive signature thing:
Jive does not support signatures. I wrote the code that the test ranch is using to provide signatures. Fortunately Jive is fairly flexible. The code was written to exactly simulate what UBB does with a little bit of improvement. If there is a ground swell of support in favor of not changing signatures in old posts, I might be convinced to revise the code. Personally I like it the way it is.
