This week's book giveaway is in the OCAJP 8 forum. We're giving away four copies of OCA Java SE 8 Programmer I Study Guide and have Edward Finegan & Robert Liguori on-line! See this thread for details.
I finally got around to taking the exam this past weekend. I had a very chaotic week leading up to it (engaged on an aggressive project at work, company announced it's being acquired, wife is 9 months pregnant, sick pets, etc.), so I'm quite pleased with the score all things considered.
While I develop in java on a regular basis, it's very rare that I do much work in the servlet space. Even when I do, it's using a 4.1.x version of tomcat with the old servlet 2.2 and jsp 1.2(?) specs. I had absolutely zero hands on experience with EL, but scored 100% on that objective. That subject area was very well covered in the book.
The only thing that really kicked my butt was developing with custom tags. This felt like a topic that was hard to learn from a book alone. I know I should've setup a tomcat 5.x environment and played around, but given I sit in front of a machine for 10+ hours each day, it was refreshing to just lay on the couch with the Head First SCWCD book.

Interestingly the questions seemed to appear in the same order as the exam objectives. Basically it started with servlets, and ended with design patterns. Multiple answer questions stated how many answers you should choose, and the test software actually validates that, so it's impossible to give the wrong number of answers.
That made a huge difference in being able to logically eliminate wrong answers.
I also felt it was easier than the practice exam at the end of the "Head First SCWCD" book. They give ample time to complete the exam, so read questions VERY carefully to guard against tricks.
Also, I was given 70 questions on the exam, but by report said "there are 69 scored questions". Does that mean one question was "not scored", or what? (perhaps one was a bonus???)
Thanx sean i think it's not compulsory for everyone to get 70 qns.I dont know.... it's surprising that u got questions in the order of objectives. Is the exam going to be like that,or u got questions in that manner? soon Iam going to close my book and relax for a while.Hope evrything goes well in the exam.
Congrtes Sean. I am planing to give exam on this saturday. I am little worried and confused with tag libraries. Can you suggest me any Mock exams or notes that will bulid my confidence with tag libraries.
