Difference Between URI and URL

can anyone explain be about the difference between the URL and URI . in web.xml we are saying for the tld like <taglib-uri> , why cant WE specify it as <taglib-url> ..?

hi,

URI is the acronym for Uniform Resource Identifier where as URL is for Uniform Resource Locator.

URI is something which looks like URL, but it acts like an identifier for the particular resource where as URL is the actual address or location of the resource.

URI may not point to any resource, where as URL always point to specific resource.

So in taglibs when we want to associate particular prefix with the tag library, there is need to inform the container to look at particular id which should be unique.

That is why it is used as taglib-uri.
