This week's book giveaway is in the OO, Patterns, UML and Refactoring forum. We're giving away four copies of Refactoring for Software Design Smells: Managing Technical Debt and have Girish Suryanarayana, Ganesh Samarthyam & Tushar Sharma on-line! See this thread for details.
SCJP - its all 'programming' and as kids, these days every one know C,C++. So once can easily learn the rules of the game and get good score. ITs more of logic. The key to get high score is to remember WHERE YOU WENT WRONG when you appear for the mocks. Its about finding SYNTAX errors in the code
SCWCD - its all about 'development'. Its very TECHNICAL. The key to get high scores is to MATURE and get comfortable with the thigns as you read the book. Its about REMEMBERING things the YOU WERE UNABLE TO RECALL when you gave some mock.SCWCD is not much of PURE LOGIC, but TECHNICAL LOGIC. Its about how well your brain can COMPRESS the volume of the data in the exam objetcives. You dont really need to think very FAST ( as we need to f\do in SCJP for each question ). Its simple- 'either you know or you dont know' and above all, the exam tells you how many options are correct. But the only hurdle is EL, JSTL and Custom Tags. But these too can be overcome provided you give proper time to cram the things. The HFSJ chapter s 4,6,7 and 11,12,13,14 are very short and manageable and cover about 60% of the exam questions.
chapter 7 is all about WHAT CAN GO IN A JSP, WHATS THE NATURE OF A SERVLET THAT RESULTS FROM THE JSP.
chapter 4 is all about servlet life cycle, request resonse API, idempotent.
chapter 6 - is SESSION API, session management mechanisms and how the container uses them, 4 session listeners.
chapter 11 - just remember what can go where in the web app structue, and the DD tags that you need to memorize
chapter 12 - security - short and sweet but denselp packe with rules
chapter 13 - filters - nothing here, just determining the order of the filter / servlet execution, cutome request / response classes and filter DD tags
chapter 14 - all THEORY - no code snippets. as fas as my experience is concerned one cag expect 8-10 questions on the exam. just remember the key words associated with each exam pattern, e.g - caching = Service Locator. shilding web components - Business Delegate, increase in complexity = Business Delegate etc etc.
i am yet to consolidate such COMPRESSED approach for chapters 8,9,10. Hope I will do it Soon. I am yet to appear for the exam, hope to get it soon. If i appear for the mocks properly, i expect 80+ % in the real exam. Its been along preparation time( reading HFSJ from 8th May ...had aboslutely no knowledge on servlet / JSP ), but I have enough time, and I think, if i channelize peoperly, i will get WCD by this december end - a great reason to celebrate new years
Hope this adds value for all ranchers thanks
SCJP 1.4 - 95% [ My Story ] - SCWCD 1.4 - 91% [ My Story ] Performance is a compulsion, not a option, if my existence is to be justified.

I missed something in the above post :
chapter 5 is all about LISTENERS, single thread model, thread safety, request dispatcher
