Hey all, I'm working in PHP for the last 1 year and I'm pretty much fed up of it.I want to switch over to Java.I have cleared Sun's exam SCJP 1.5 with 91% and now I'm about to appear for SCWCD 1.5.I have two doubts- 1. Any good books, study material on the Web,for SCWCD 1.5? 2. If I give this exam, Will I be able to switch over to Java? I guess I'm posting my question in the wrong section of this site, but sorry friends,I'm new to this site. Awaiting your replies, Abhijit
I believe that by writing the SCJP exam youve already switched to Java SE. SCWCD will be a crucial benchmark for your skills on the presentation tier of the Java EE platform. Going further, you can enhance your skills by learning business tier technologies like EJB 3 and further compliment your skill set by learning Hibernate ORM.
1. Check the SCWCD 5 Links 2. I don't quite understand the logic; certainly by studying for the exam and learning all about Java EE Web tier then yes, you'll be able to write Java Web applications. However, this doesn't happen magically by just passing the exam You could easily switch to Java EE without taking the exam...
P.S. Why are you fed up with PHP? It's a lot quicker to write applications in PHP than in Java on the whole, just because you can be looser with your code and use built in functions more easily. For small websites, PHP is great - Java EE only comes into its own in larger, high performance applications which need serious OO models with backing data sources.
P.P.S. Using Caucho's Quercus module you can actually write PHP scripts which execute within a Java EE Web container! So you get the best of both worlds of development.

True, though it's also about job availability surely? I know Java EE is very popular in certain countries, but (for example) here in the UK PHP seems to dominate the job adverts. Java jobs are poorly advertised (or just not available) in comparison. Commonly the best paid jobs posted here are lead games developers in C++

I just did a search at www.jobserve.com (A UK site) and the term PHP returned 321 results and Java returned 1266. Even allowing for false Java returns because of Java Script adverts, Java has a distinct edge on the number of jobs advertised.
According to itjobswatch.co.uk
The UK average (excluding London) salary against the term Java is
for PHP it is
Allowing for lies, dammned lies and statistics, Java is an attractive skill
