You might want to peruse this page, which links to all available Sun certificates. Each one has a page that describes the exam objectives; from those it should become clearer which one might be suitable for you.

My impression is that SCJA is a lower-grade certificate than SCJP, and thus you would have no benefit in taking it if you have the SCJP already.

If you already have SCJP, then ofcourse you do not need to go for SCJA.
SCJP focuses on core Java Programming concepts, while SCJA covers just the basics of different Java technologies, OOPS concepts, programming and more.
According to Sun Microsystems, candidates for this exam include entry level Java programmers, students studying to become Java programmers, and project or program managers working with Java technology in the software development industry.

IMHO, SCJA is good to re-inforce our understanding regarding OO design and programming (I hope Sun will elaborate and review this exam). Even if someone pass SCJP, does not mean s/he will be a good programmer.

thanks

Hi Guys, I am new to this Forum. Just joined as I need some serious advise from all of you experienced Software folks. I am based in India , currently working as a System Admin in a MNC. As to my educational background, I am a Computer Science Graduate and hold the Microsoft MCITP cert. I ahve been working in this profile for the last 2.5 years. However, my primary subject of interest is Software and programming. I want to make a move into the software domain and want to become a software developer in the future. As of now, I have no progamming exp. in the industry. Please let me know as to what certs I should look to get so that I can get into the software development field. Advise from all of you guys is more than welcome and would be very helpful to me in deciding my course of action. Awaiting your replies,

Thanks & regards,
Jake.

Oracle offers variety of Java Certifications for all Java Editions (Java SE, Java EE and Java ME).

SCJA

Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 5/SE 6 (Formerly Sun Certified Java Associate (SCJA) ) certification provides basic knowledge required to manage a Java project.

You can gain basic knowledge of Object-Oriented Concepts, UML representation of OO concepts, the Java programming language, and general knowledge of Java Platforms and Technologies.
