User Interface: How Elaborate?

I'm currently working on the SCJD programming assignment. So far, I've mainly been working on the user interface. I was hoping to get some feedback from those of you who've earned the certification on how elaborate the user interface needs to be.

For example, is it okay to use a stock JOptionPane dialog to gather user input where you probably would develop a custom dialog if this were a real application.

While I want to do a good job on the assignment and show that I know how to develop a good user interface, I don't want to labor over interface issues that won't count for much in the final score. In other words, how much is enough?
