Any Development Version of the Java 2 will do. i.e Any version above 1.2 such as 1.2, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3. I personally feel one should go for JDK1.3
I hope this helps.

I believe the safest bet is the most update version like 1.3 or 1.3.1, because it always have some previously bugs fixed and new features added. But don't go for the development(beta) version.
