Please turn smilies off by default

... at least in the two XML forums. It's very easy to have something like <xsl:value-of> turn into a smiley. A lot of people don't bother correcting their posts after this happens, and even if you do, there are now extra white space characters that have to be removed.

At the bottom of the "Post A Reply" page under the smilies is a checkbox " Disable smilies in this post." Each post must disable their smilies on an individual basis. Turning off smilies by forum is not an option. Of course, we could disable smilies altogether...

Why would it be hard to enable or disable it depending on the forum? (I assume you have the source code for the UBB software, if it's in Perl.)
Also, when I edit a post, it doesn't remember that smilies should be turned off.

I hate the smilies being on by default.
I doubt anybody here is going to spend much time customizing UBB in the future. It's rumored that we are hoping to switch to Jive before too long.
