Hi there,
Been an SCJP for over a year or so... also have OOAD, Visual Age and Websphere certs. I am considering taking the Developer cert and looking for general impressions. I've read over a few posts here and seems from all vantage points, this shouldn't be too big a deal. My only concern is the written exam. I can't seem to get a real clear impression what this is all about. Can any one help here? The objectives on the Sun site seem to be lacking real detail. Any advice at all will be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Essentially, you have 90 minutes to answer, in short-essay form, a few questions relating to the design/implementation of your project. You should expect to explore areas such as: advantages/disadvantages to some of the major design decisions you made, why you made them, etc.
Since you have a good amount of experience behind you and, assuming you're honest, you are the one writing your application, you shouldn't have any problems justifying your design decisions and going into detail about code-level program specifics.
BTW, I haven't actually taken the exam myself yet, so I may be leaving quite a bit out. Can anyone else pitch in?

The written exam should not influence anyone to do or not do the developer certification at all. If you've done the assignment yourself, there is almost no way you can fail the written exam.
It took me about 15 minutes to complete the exam and I passed.

Don't even consider the written exam. It is a piece of cake. As long as you do the assignment yourself. And if you didn't do the assignment, then you'll fail the written, as you should, you cheater JK

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the info re: the written part... I wouldn't have let it make my decision for me, was just wondering about it since the format seemed quite different than every other exam i've encountered to date. Looking forward to ordering the assignment voucher on Monday!

Dear friends,
Useful info for the exam, though not planning for the exam, but in the near future I will plan.
