does anyone no if you get penalised for using images in your GUI (i was thinking of doing like a splash screen when the app is launched).
It did say that the gui should be created entriely using Swing (which i interpretted as not to use any AWT components), but is this meant to be taken literally? any thoughts ?

I would not recommend it. Do not add any features or functionality not specifically asked for.

Some people have Toolbars that have little images in them, and thats fine. I had images, but only in my User Documentation for the Client and Server in the HTML page. They were basically screen shots of the program.
Images are fine, but don't go overboard
