Here is the link for free beta exam on SCJD JDK1.4 version from SUN for all SCJPs.
http://suned.sun.com/US/certification/java/beta.html
So if we can pass, we are going to save almost $400, isn't it? As we will be recognized as regular SCJD in Java 2 Platform.

Thanks for the link. Sounds like if you pass you are a SCJD for free. Not a bad deal.

O guys, I think Sun is going to recruit only a few SCJPs among the existing thousands....
So chance of getting a free voucher should be ----
0.01 % or so....
Still waiting with hopes...

Hey , I just pay the money and download the assignment .
And I wonder whether I would have to change my design when it is released during the time I still working on it ?

I've contacted someone from Sun Education whose email I retained from registration for the current SCJD. They did know about the new beta SCJD, so I sent them the link. My question for them was if there was any way to complete the current SCJD such that it would fulfill the requirements for the new, updated SCJD about to be released. No answer yet, but I'll let the Ranch know when they do reply...

Ooooooooops
I missed it!! The only thing that is keeping me away from this certification is the amount involved. Only if knew....
Anyway, is there a chance that SCWCD will also go for beta testing? I don't want to miss that.

Guys,
Is the SCWCD also destined for an update?

p.s. no reply from Sun Education regarding what could possibly done for those currently working on the SCJD so that they could have their cert be up to date with the soon-to-be-released updated SCJD.

Definitely please post whatever info you get about the beta SCJD exam.
It is definitely a "worry item" for me. I can understand how a multiple choice exam might need to replace the test bank, and from time to time have a new "beta", but I do not understand how or why a coding assignment would go "beta".
I wonder what the title of the new exam is? Does the certificate say something else?

Kevin,
I'm not sure what would be done to update the SCJD, but my guess is that Swing may be taken out of the equation in favor of a webapp-style frontend.
The assignment (vs. a multiple choice format) is what gives the SCJD its punch. The assignment format is not likely to be replaced with a multiple choice layout.
I'm not holding my breath for an answer from Sun regarding the question, "is there is a way to complete this current SCJD assignment such that the requirements for the new version are fulfilled and my cert is thus up to date with the new version?"
Truth is, it probably does not matter. The answer will/would most likely be, "complete the current SCJD and be happy, then after a while, come back and update it with the new version... and bring your checkbook."

Some points came out from the discussions of this thread.
(1) Is SCWCD also going for an upgradation within a few months?
My Opinion: No. Because it's a new exam, it'll take more time to jump to another version. Besides, curretn version of the SCWCD exam covers servlet 2.3 and jsp 1.2 --- so there is no need for exam upgradation until the new APIs on them comes. (You know, JSP is in 2.0 beta form now , same should happen for servlets also).
(2) Is there any need for SCJD exam upgradation?
My Opinion: Yes. Each and everything is worth upgradation. Specially when API is running fast. But swing should not be eliminated from this exam.
(3) Are the people who signed for the SCJD beta exam, will get a free voucher?
My Opinion: No. Only a few lucky persons shopuld get it. I agree with Manish that, I would appear for teh SCJD exam a lot earlier if the amount of money would not be so high.
(4) What about the existing SCJDs on 1.2?
My Opinion: Same as SCJP 1.2 people. I think it does not matter a lot --- if you are SCJP/SCJD then the company recruiting you understands you can serve their purpose. Ofcourse in that same job opening, if another SCJP/SCJD in 1.4 applies, he'll get an advanatage over you.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Ashik,
I agree with you on all counts. I've yet to find specific dates that the 1.4 versions of the SCJP and SCJD will be released. Have you seen anything regarding dates?

It was released a couple days ago. See my post from yesterday titled:
"How is the new SCJD (CX-310-252A) different from previous version"
If anybody knows how the next SCJD is different, could you put in in my post?
Thanks!

Kevin,
Are you telling me that "CX-310-252A" is latest version SCJD? which is SCJD v1.4? God!! i'm so confused.

Yes!
The SCJD CX-310-252A exam is new.
However, I don't know how "new". That is why I am going to have to start printing hard copies of Sun's certification site, because I don't know what the previous info was, and I can't determine when Sun changes things.
What is currently posted on Sun's site is "new" (at last within the past few weeks.) The last time I checked Sun's developer web site the info matched what I currently have in my possession for the developer exam assignment( which I purchased some time ago).
I don't know if CX-310-252A means "JDK1.4". That is one of my outstanding questions in my other post.

Kevin,
Do you think the programming assignment will specifically say that it requires "JDK 1.4"? Or can we ask Sun to verify that it will requires "JDK 1.4"?

From what I read on Suns site I don't believe exam CX-310-252A is the same as the new beta exam they are coming out withn soon.

I am just really upset that the day after I left for vacation is the day they announce the Beta, and when I get back it is too late.
I missed out and I am really bummed about it.

Sun notified the SCJD 1.4 beta testers today... The timespan to complete the assignment is quite short (1 month). Then, we will have two weeks to take the essay exam.
I'm looking forward to this

Cool Valetin, I am glad you are also taking the Beta exam. I thought I had missed out, but I guess I was able to use my powers I gained from being a Bartender at Javaranch and got in.
I got my e-mail today too.
Good Luck

Hey I got in too. Now I have to put SCWCD study on hold for a while to work on the beta exam. I hope the 1 month limit will be enough...

Does that mean the REAL SCJD 1.4 project and exam will not be able until the Beta completed first? Which means another month and half or longer?
Also, can you you guys discuss the difference between the SCJD 1.2 and SCJD 1.4 beta? I meant not word for word. Just some idea like what kind of technologies are required(e.g RMI, Swing)? That way we can start studying some new materials if needed.

Thanks Mark, for your support!
But I'll wait for another chance some other time. May be my company will one day pay for SCJD or SCEA voucher...
Good luck to all you beta testers.
