Hello,
I read the SCJD FAQ forum and still haven't quite found an answer. Could someone please refer a book to me for certification in SCJD. I recently passed the SCJP and I read a book from RHE and was very satisfied.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your time,
Ryan

My advice would be not to waste your money on a scjd book... but rather read through the wonderful posts in this forum... they answered every question I could think of and there is a great Google search to help!
Just my opinion though...

Hi Ryan,
At the risk of tooting my own horn, I would seriously suggest that you look over my book on the SCJD at your local bookstore. It is, to my knowledge, the only title that addresses the various ways that J2SE 1.4 can help on the exam. It also includes ground-up explanations of RMI, Sockets, Threading, and SWING, along with design and coding suggestions. Finally, it includes a complete mock assignment, from the ground up, that evolves as your knowledge base grows. Of course, I and the other authors are available, though this forum and others, to answer questions.

Hey Ryan, what about the answer to question #1 in the FAQ, it has links to at least three books on the SCJD. And also you really don't need any book.

Not any book at all ? That's an interesting statement. I wonder how many people have passed the SCJD without using any book at all?

With this forum you wouldn't really need a book. you can get all the information here and at the Java tutorials.
I can't comment on your book because I haven't read it. You could send me a free one and I'll review it on the JavaRanch Book Review forum. wink wink nudge nudge.

Hi Max,
I still havent seen your book in stores... I will look again tonight when I head out to Borders... it would have been nice to get another point of view.
BTW: I lied earlier... I did use the Core Java: Advanced Features. Good sections on swing and rmi.

Actually if you click on the link for the first book it is not valid. I already tried that
Thanks for everyone's reply. I will sift though the forums and see what I can find.
Thanks and kind regards,
Ryan

Hi Mark,
All joking aside, I would appreciate an impartial review. I'll contact Apress and ask them to send a copy, if you'll email me with a address. A private note should be fine for that.

Hi Nate,
The book just came out aug 2nd, so your best bet is Amazon: you can follow the link in my signature. The response so far has been pretty strong: we've already had to go to another printing due to bookstores buying so many.
Basically, we tried to write the book that we wished we had had. That is, we tried to explore the topics in such a way that passing the exam would be a natural outgrowth of learning the material in the book. The goal is for you to know your way around Threads, RMI, SWING, and J2SE 1.4 by the time you finish the 300 some odd pages. We read all the other books and web materials, did all the research we could think of, dug into the new features of J2SE 1.4, and tried to extract the important parts. However, its not a beginners book. The idea is that a SCJP, or someone who could pass the SCJP, would benefit. Other people should probably read beginner books first.
For example, Jeremy's chapter on Swing doesn't just say that your GUI should do this or that, it actually explains some layout theory(don't worry, just for a few pages), then goes into exactly how and why Swing supports this or that UI paradigm. Then we tie it all into the sample project.
As you might be able to tell, I'm very proud of the effort. We worked very hard on a project that, we hope, will be of some benefit to everyday developers, and I think we did it well.

Max,
I ordered your book from Amazon yesterday. How come it still said "Not yet published". It is August 6th already.

Hi Joe,
The Amazon page isn't updated yet for some reason, but the books are in(Some friends have already received thier copies). Given that the cover has also changed somewhat and Amazon isn't reflecting that, I expect they are just falling behind a little bit. Interestingly enough, Amazon UK is fully updated. I wonder how it all works for Amazon?
