Nope...
The curious thing is that they mentioned that the assignment would be available for download on August 29. I forwarded Evelyn's mail the second I got it to Monica but then nothing... One month is really short, I hope they won't wait too long to give us permission to download the assignment...
Good luck

Well I just downloaded mine, but mine did not have a data file. I wonder why.
But it also looks like they don't provide any code for us anymore. But since it is like the previous assignemtn, I wonder if we can just use those classes.
Actually I think with the new IO classes, they want use to use them and use them correctly, so the older code that they provided to us before won't have that.
It also seems like a lot more work, and of course less time with the Beta.

Downloaded mine last night and also have no data class that the instructions talk about. It clearly says that a database file is supplied to us. I think Im going to e-mail them and ask.
The beta is more difficult than the current exam being o code is supplied anymore. But other than that very similar to the current exam just uses a different business model for the application.
I thinking now of using most of my assignment from Fly By Night. Still not quite sure how to tackle the database implementation, have to work on that over the weekend.
Good luck to everybody. You would think they could give us more than a month, but I like working under tight schedules.

I agree Mike, I think the model is exactly like FBN.
I will use almost all my code from there, but I will get to add the LockManager, split my db pagacke into two packages db and server, which I should have done in the first time through.
I think the Data class might still work for this file, just need to change some of the implementation into the new IO classes.
Good Luck, and I think a month is a very short time for doing more work than the current assignment, but heck it's free.

ChrisChange,
Please change your login name to follow the JavaRanch standards.
Unfortunately I am at home now, otherwise I would post a linkt ot where you could change it.
2. Are you accepted as a Beta tester? Plus the download does not happen at the link that was posted a month ago, but through Sun's testing site, which we all find our grades at.
at the Galton site.

ChrisChang,
The link Mark is talking about is this one:
change your displayed name here.
And if you are a registered beta tester you should have received an email from Sun giving detailed explanations on how to go about downloading the assignment...

If you had registered in time (in July), you should have received an email from the Sun Certification Project Manager by now. If this isn't the case then, there is no way for you to attempt the beta exam.

Regarding that missing data file, I emailed Evelyn and Monica and this is the answer I got:

In reference to the "data file" in the Developer beta, you will need to create
your own sample data file. This was not stated in the instructions, which I
have noted and will be updating for the live exam.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
Thank you.
Evelyn

I guess it's pretty clear, though I'm wondering how they'll set up their automatic testing without providing that d**n data file. Well...

Agree... they don't even give us the "Magic Number" that is included in the data file. And the interface (DBMain) they give us have many problems..
BTW, I have written to who2contact@sun.com some days ago and still do not get a reply from them. Next time I will mail to Monica instead.

I never use the who2contact address since I know that they don't answer very quickly... I always write directly to people, like Monica or Evelyn for instance...
As for the magic number, you can use what you want, I guess...
