Howdy all -- I've posted a couple of pieces from the Developer section of the book as pdfs, but you have to enter the file names into your browser as follows (in other words, there's no way to link to them from any pages -- sorry, we're working on it!)
http://www.wickedlysmart.com/certpdfs/ch10.pdf
http://www.wickedlysmart.com/certpdfs/ch14.pdf
We'll work on more soon (give us a few more days to wrap up some awful deadlines : ( )
Cheers,
Kathy and Bert

Thanks. It will prove to be a great source for everyone here.
Can I copy the links into the FAQ?

Yay!! Huzzah, and Thank You, Kathy.
I think it's wonderful that you're willing to make this information available to us for free.
Thanks to your publisher as well. It's not often a company is willing to pass up the possibility of a few extra sales.
This made my day!

Kahty what are your comments about this review on Amazon of your & Bills Bates book Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035 & 310-027)
Not a SCJD study guide, January 5, 2003 Reviewer: A reader from Colorado Springs, CO United States.
The book title is misleading. I needed a SCJD study guide. The book is primarily the SCJP (310-035) study guide occupying 555 out of 750 pages. The SCJD section is nothing but a listing of questions for you to think about. While the questions may be useful, they by no means warrant the "Developer" portion of the title. If you are looking for a real SCJD study guide, get yourself a copy of "The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4" by Mehran Habibi, et al, instead. It has a real example that is developed throughout the book.

It is difficult to get everything from one book. The bigger the picture you work with , perhaps the better a Developer you will be.
For certain, the extracts posted by Kathy will be useful/crucial in passing the exam.
I haven't seen the questions to think about yet but I suspect in the real-world they will be useful in setting constraints on a Developer task. Useful when you are working to tight deadlines.
I've got Max's book and I'm looking forward to delving into the bigger picture/real-world application when I'm ready for it.
Both books should complement each other nicely.

Howdy -- unfortunately I think this reviewer is right (although the one-star really hurts .
The title of our book IS misleading, and Bert and I were not able to choose the name of the book.
We believe our book should be treated as an SCJP book that includes a "bonus" section on the SCJD.
We *do* think that the Developer info we have is useful, but NOT worth buying the book for if you are already an SCJP. That's why we're trying to make most of the Developer info available for free online, for those of you in this forum who have already passed SCJP.
So we're trying to do what we can for damage control by posting on javaranch to let people know that our book is almost exclusively an SCJP book, and also I posted a five-star review of Max's book on Amazon, specifically stating that you should buy HIS book if you working on the developer certification only, rather than ours.
I guess our official position is:
* Our book is for SCJP.
* It does happen to contain some useful bonus information on the SCJD
* Our book does NOT (in spite of the name and wording on the cover) offer "complete coverage" of the SCJD.
* Buy our book only if you are not yet an SCJP (or you have an unlimited budget for books
* If you are already an SCJP, we recommend Max's book as the best source of help and information on actually building the Developer exam project.
* Because we *do* feel that our Developer information is useful, it is not worth buying the whole book just for that. And that's why we want to make as much of the Developer section as we can available for Developer certification candidates who have already passed SCJP (and thus do not need another SCJP book!)
* So we do NOT believe that our book and Max's book are complimentary. Our INFORMATION and Max's are complintary, covering different aspects of the exam, but his is a book worth buying for the SCJD info, and ours is not.
OK, so that all said, we'll do our best to post as much (probably ALL) of our Developer cert chapters as we can get away with. You could help us in return by letting others know that they should not buy our book just for the Developer info, unless they have plenty of money to burn.
However, we of course believe we have the best SCJP book
If not the best, definitely the friendliest
cheers,
Kathy

I can't speak for Kathy, but I wish the reviewer had sent me a note before posting that. I think that the tone of the review is unkind, and the assessment unjustified.
Kathy's book is an excellent source of information, and offers insights that mine does not. Correspondingly, mine offers details that hers does not. Which one is right for you? That depends on what you need help with.
Either way, however, that's a five star book. Let me sum up my opinion on this matter.
1. The fact the she's making the SCJD portion available for free speaks to her amazing generosity, and of her publisher's.
2. Her sincere interest in helping the Java community is clear here. You don't find that sort of altruism very often.
3. For the record, my order for two copies of Kathy's book are already in the mail, placed through bookpool via the javaranch link.
4. Did I mention that it's a five star book?

Oops ! My mistake!
Kathy,Max is right. This is VERY altruistic of you and Bert.
I guess it goes with the territory i.e. starving writer , starving artist, etc.
if I were tempted to revisit SCJP your's and Bert's book is top of the list.

I've read the two chapter's Kathy made available, and I think it EXACTLY the kind of material a SCJD study guide should provide.
Like it says in the book, they can't tell you the answer 'cause that's what the exam is about. But they can - and do - ask the kind of questions a developer needs to think about.
For example: When given a choice between using sockets and RMI, the "correct" answer is the one that makes the most sense for you and your customer. But what are the tradeoffs? How do you know which one makes more sense? These are the things that we should be asking ourselves - and the kind of things Kathy's book *does* ask.
If the rest of the book is of the same caliber as the released chapters (and I strongly suspect they are) then I would rate it at five stars only because that's the max.
Great job! Thanks for the free chapters!
Any more on the way?

I bought the book yesterday and read the intro & the 1st chapter. It really is worth getting the book if you are serious about getting you SCJP.
I let some of the guys at work browse it yesterday and two decided to get the book based on that. The book really has the perfect format for studying. The basic commen sense advice in the intro alone is fantastic.

Way back when, it was the only book I got for the SCJP and SCJD exams, and it was the only book I needed. Its ten horseshoes in the Bunkhouse are well-deserved.
