Developer Certification time estimate

Some time back, I saw a thread on here about the total development hours it would take a coder to design, code, debug, and submit a successful developer programming assignment, although I can't find that discussion, going through the recently posted threads. I remember the estimates ranging from 3-5 weeks of full time work (depending on previous experience) to complete the project and take the test. Is that accurate?

Hi Steve,
I would guess that five weeks is very aggressive, if you anything at all to learn. However, if you already know threading, swing, and RMI intimately, then yes, I would say 3-5 weeks.

Hi Max,
What is the maximum time limit one can take for the SCJD exam? I mean for the project development till upload the assignment. I saw in some thread, who took about 4 months to upload the assignment since he downloaded.
Is there any time frame for the assignment?

I don't believe there is a time limit once you download the assignment...there may be one once you purchase the exam voucher. I downloaded the assignment in August of last year and finished in February of this year...working on odds and ends of it during my spare time.
I'm trying to get an accurate time estimate for completing the assignment so my company can award me "training hours". I would have to agree that 5 weeks is a tight timeframe to complete this task for even an experienced developer.

you get one year from time of exam voucher purchase, but no time limit on the assignment.

I'm going on 3 years from downloading my assignment (I barely have any free time as I work ~60hr a week on my real job). Has anyone had any success submitting in such a long time-frame? I'm just worried that they'll be more stringent with the idea that he's had so much time to work on it (which I haven't). Finally have a short break at work and am hoping to complete the assignment at nights.

Hi Kimo,

I think it is a good idea to restart and go further with the assignment. This is an achievement. Do not worry how long you have nothing done. Just start.

It took me about two years to finish the assignment from when I downloaded it. After a couple of months of work I started an MSc in Software Engineering which was full time for 15 months so it got forgotten about until after I was finished the course. It took me about 4-5 months to complete the project during the evenings while working full time after this.

The very the same for me. I took 2 years from the time I downloaded the assignment. I had not much time for this project. It was no problem at all.

Hmm
Seems like i am not left out. I downloaded my assignment(B&S) in September 2005(SCJP in Oct 2004.) while doing my undergrad. Didnt have time to do it cause i had to graduate in Dec. 2005. Then Jan. 2006, got a job and started working full time and didnt have the slightest time to even look at it. I had developed it to a level but i am scared to death to submit it. I had to take the SCWCD not to allow the other voucher expired (which i failed terribly in Dec. 2006). I started an Msc in Advanced Software Eng. in Sept. 2006(Bournemouth Uni. UK), so i had quite a lot to cover for the Msc, so no way to do the SCJD. Failed the SCWCD in Dec. 2006 due to work load(actually primarily due to the fact that i just didnt want to waste the voucher). Switched to Advanced Computing by research in Feb. 2007, so now definatetly no time again cause i have to turn in my thesis for sept. 2007 so i have to focus. Grades are good in the Msc(Distinction), so now i am being considered for a PhD. I just bought Andrew's book again(got the soft copy at first) to now try and put a final touch and refactor the code with the time i can find. All these at 24yrs of age, i just hope i can find the time. So my own estimated time is 2yrs approx(in september). Anyways it is good not to be left alone in the loop of having the assignment for a while.

Finally finished my assignment and just took the exam. That's 3 years and 2 months! Perhaps a record?

I feel like the last guy who's passing the marathon finish line in the dark after everyone has gone home. Thanks for the support and for encouraging not to give up! Keeping my fingers crossed, hoping I'll pass

Its a relief to read this.. I am in the same boat as some of you guys, I work long hours so have little time to work on the assignment. As per Suns statements below the assignment should take in the order of a working week or two weeks MAX. I wonder who came up with these estimates..

James

"Obviously, the amount of time taken by a candidate to create a working solution to the assignment varies greatly. Brooks, in "The Mythical Man Month," noted years ago that programmer productivity varies by at least ten-to-one. However, a fast programmer might create a solution in about twenty hours. A more typical expectation of a time requirement might be in the order of a working week. If you spend a lot more than two weeks on the project, you might well be creating something that is more detailed than is really required, and you might want to review the scoring criteria and problem statement provided in the assignment."

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
