Hi Albert,
Welcome to JavaRanch.
Have you looked at the FAQ and SCJD links yet? There are links to useful tutorials, books and other information there. Some of the books are excellent, and if you would like recommendations, then people here will happily provide them.
There is no real "prepare this first" instructions anywhere (although I hear Max's book comes close). Basically you shouldnt need such instructions, because the assignment can be treated as a learning experienced...
There is no timelimit on how long you can take to do your assignment. So you can purchase your assignment today, and then work on any part of it that you feel comfortable with. You can then research the areas you are not comfortable with.
Be careful when you purchase your assignment: there have been reports of some Sun offices telling people that they need to purchase the exam voucher at the same time. There is an expiration on the voucher (in Australia it is 2 months, other countries differ) and there is a limit on how much Prometric will allow you to reschedule (12 months from memory) so if you purchase the exam voucher, you may inadverntantly get a time limit on your assignment.
Good luck, and please post any question you like.
Regards, Andrew
