I got my SCJP certification about two years ago, and I registered for the SCJD shortly thereafter. I got the assignment to about 80-85% completion, and then got a new job and never ended up finishing it. What I'm trying to decide now is whether I should go ahead and finish my older SCJD exam (JDK 1.2), or just eat the money and start over on the new assignment with the new certification. I know there is an upgrade exam for SCJP 1.2 -> 1.4, but I haven't heard of any such thing for the SCJD exam, so I'm guessing it doesn't exist. Any reasoned opinions either way would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Jim Welcome to JavaRanch I agree with Mark. Since you are so far into the old assignment, you might as well complete it. There is no versioning on SCJD, so it is not a case of having an old certification. And the old and new assignments are very very similar in concept, so if you did the new assignment, you would spend much of your time redoing work you have already done. Regards, Andrew
Mark and Andrew, Thanks for the quick replies. I was under the impression that the Developer exam had a version number like the Programmer exam does. That makes my choice much easier. Now I just have to decide what I want to do once I finish this one! I suspect I'm getting ahead of myself again, though. Thanks again.
I've got you beat. I *just* got the results from my SCJD for Java 2 and I originally registered in 1998 (or maybe 1999)! I have the odd combination of SCJP 1.1 and SCJD 2 - trying to find out if I can go for SCWCD and some of the others without taking a newer SCJP test. Did basically the same thing though - off to a great start, then job, layoffs, etc. got in the way. But I finally did it, and you can too! Good luck!

Eddie, It's good to know that they would still accept your exam even after such a long period of time. As for the SCJP exam, in case you didn't know, there's an upgrade exam that you can take for $100, but I don't know if you would qualify for it since the upgrade exam says that it's for anyone who has completed the Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform exam. I'd try asking anyway if I were you. It's worth a shot. Information about the upgrade exam can be found here: Sun Certified Programmer for Java[tm] 2 Platform Upgrade Exam (CX-310-036) Actually, I just looked up the Web Component Developer certification, and it explicitly lists that it's "for Sun Certified Programmers for Java 2 Platform (1.1, 1.2 and 1.4)", so it looks like you're in the clear. I guess that 1.1 is considered Java 2 Platform after all. It has been so long that I couldn't remember. Not knowing what is on the SCWCD exam, if I was you, I'd probably take the upgrade exam first, and then the SCWCD exam. You never know when Sun might decide to stop offering the upgrade exam and leave you out in the cold, so to speak.
