Hello,
I have completed my SCJP1.4 and am preparing for the SCJD. I am familiar with all developer exam topics(that were not included in SCJP). I am yet to start with my assignment. I don't have any work experience in Java and so a bit hesitant about the Project.
Can you please tell me how and from where I should begin it?
Thanks a lot.
NS

Hi Nandini
Welcome to JavaRanch.
Have you downloaded your assignment yet? If not, then that should be your first step.
Once you have downloaded it, you will see that there are several distinct areas to work with. Some of them you may find very easy, and some of them you may want to ask questions about.
But you will need to either have a very specific question, or you will need to post a plan of what you intend to do and ask for comments.
There is no time limit on the assignment, so you can take your time to learn anything needed to complete your assignment.
If you are really stuck then there are several good books that describe in general terms how to approach the SCJD assignment - they are listed in the FAQ.
Regards, Andrew

Hai,
Thanks for ur reply. I downloaded the assignment (Fly By Night)in March 2003 and since then trying to learn the topics and working out examples pertaining to it. May I know when that assignment is likely to expire? Also I want to start with the assignment. They have given me some files along with that. Do I have to start with that or can I have my own classes to do it?
Thanks

Hi Nandini
May I know when that assignment is likely to expire?

At present there is no expiration on the assignments. You can take as long as you want or need.
However if you purchased the exam voucher at the same time that you purchased the assignment (they are two separate charges), then you may have an expiration date on when you can book exams with that voucher.
The new assignment has an expiration on versions of the JDK you may use. The instructions I received from Sun state that the JDK "must not have been superseded by a new production version for more than 18 months by the time you make your submission." This statement does not appear to be in the Fly By Night Services instructions, but I think you might want to ensure you are using a current JDK.
They have given me some files along with that. Do I have to start with that or can I have my own classes to do it?

You will have to use their classes in your submission.
You do have to either modify or subclass the provided Data class, and fix any deprecated methods in the provided methods. Your instructions should state something like "these classes are complete", so I believe you should not make any other changes to the functionality of these classes.
Regards, Andrew
