The book that people in this forum refer to most is Mehran Habbibi's book, The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4. Please see certification book reviews at the Java Ranch Bunkhouse here
As for the exam..... I feel it is tougher than the "test-only" exams because of the assignment. However, it actually is a bit more interesting and fun too. I have seen estimates for the amount of time it takes to complete the assignment: they vary anywhere from 100 - 160 hours depending on how familiar you are with the topics (RMI, locking, GUI).
This forum is an excellent place to get help. The search tool is good and there is a lot of information already out there. Good luck!

Terry,
Thanx again, after visiting that site now i m bit .
This is what I found in so called syllabus section of SCJD.
Write an application program using Java technology. The application requires the following:
- A graphical user interface demonstrating good principles of design
- A network connection, using a specified protocol, to connect to an information server
- A network server, which connects to a previously specified Java technology database
- A database, created by extending the functionality of a previously written piece of code, for which only limited documentation is available

I m more concern abt first point, dose it mean SWINGS (the only think in java ,I dont like to work with )??
Also all my experience is in jsp/servlet/ejb.. and i found one link with
this words(scwcd). So I guess going for scwcd will be an better option to chose.kindly suggest
Cheers

Yes, it does mean Swing. You also need RMI or sockets for the assignment. My experience is similar to yours, with the exception that I don't have any EJB. I'm considering the SCJD assignment a way to stretch me technically and more fully round out my Java experience.
However, the web component developer test is an excellent one to have on your resume. I passed it back in August, after reading Hanumant Deshmukh's SCWCD Exam Study Kit book. This book is *** perfect *** for the current version of the SCWCD test and is all you need, especially with your experience. However, a new version of the test is coming out in January I think, and it has been stated in posts that the previous tools to prepare for the original test won't help as much in the new test because there will be some new objectives, etc. Also stated in some posts out there - the original version of any of the exams is typically the least tricky and most straightforward. After an exam has been out there a while they typically revise it to make it a little tougher.
Anyway, our background is similar and I doubt you will have any problem passing SCWCD Exam in a very speedy timeframe. My studying lasted only 3 weeks and consisted of this:
1. Read SCWCD book and made some notes with each chapter to enforce remembering
2. Skimmed the book and my notes once again
3. Took a couple mock exams from the CD that came with the book (got 85% on both, and these mocks were VERY similar to real exam)
4. Took real exam after only 3 weeks and got 89 (note: I do work full time also, but spent probably one-two hours a day studying.)
Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
