Hello Friends,
I have just gotten started on SCJD. I am just keen to know how this operates. When we download the assignment from Sun's site, do we have an option to say we want an 'NX' assignment or the old one?
Or is it just done randomly by Sun. Also, is grading the only differentiator between the two?
versions?
thanks

Welcome Vrinda. You definitely found the right place by coming to this forum if you plan to do SCJD.
I don't think Sun gives out the old exam anymore, but I'm not sure. I downloaded back in October and I don't think I was given any option for the old assignment. Even if they did, you probably would not want it. Most the folks out here now are doing the new assignment.
The grading scale is a little bit different between the 2. The old exam had a possible of 155 points - I don't know the breakdown. The new has 400 points. To see info on the breakdown, check the Sun Certification Results forum and find someone who passed SCJD with the 155 point breakdown and then someone with the 400 point breakdown. You can compare them.
One other helpful link for you will be the SCJD Links and FAQ page (link is at the top of this forum display also). In the FAQ part I think there are a couple questions explaining the difference between the 2 assignments.
Also, in this forum, you will see reference to "Max's Book". This is "The Sun Certified Java Developer Exam with J2SE 1.4" by Mehran Habibi. Mehran's nickname is Max and he posts out here sometimes. He used to bartend this forum. This book is what I consider a *MUST HAVE* for this assignment. (unless you are familiar with all the stuff in this exam already )
Good luck. Also, be sure to use the search facility out here in this forum. Lots of the questions that folks have when they first start are already out here and you can get a lot of good tips for getting started.

Thanks Terry!!
Actually I have book by Kathy Sierra for the preparation. Do you think that would suffice? Or I would do well with Max's prep. guide?

Hi Vrinda,
Actually I have book by Kathy Sierra for the preparation. Do you think that would suffice? Or I would do well with Max's prep. guide?

Nowadays, there are many good books in the market.
I use Max's book as my major reference of the programs and Kathy's book as concept reference.
In addition, somedays ago, I have read Simon's book (4th edition), he also provides a good example in his book about the assignment.
Hope this help.
Nick.

Vrinda -
I have Kathy's book (borrowing it from a friend) in addition to Max's book. Kathy's book has a good overall list of things to think about. However, Max's book is just a super example of an application that is similar to the SCJD assignment. I would be lost without Max's book right now.
Good luck!
