Exam essay

I was trying to find out how to complete the next steps after uploading my assignment, but I didn't find a decent explanation on the sun site. So I contacted sun educational services, but they could not answer me with certainty (sigh) . I hope some of you who have passed the SCJD can answer this:

After uploading my assignment, can I wait until I get the score before I do the essay exam ? The person from SES told me to do the essay exam right after uploading my assignment. Fine with me, so I asked what would happen if I would auto fail for the assignment but have a pass for the essay. The answer was that I would probably take the essay again. Right..I'm not planning to do the essay over again if I have to re-submit my assignment.

What I would like to know:

- Do you receive the results from the assignment without having done the esssay ? So if this is true, I can wait with doing the essay until I'm really sure I passed the assignment...

- Supose you take the essay before getting the score of your assignment, and you pass the essay but fail for the assignment. Do you have to redo the essay if you re-submit the assignment ?

I find it a bit embarassing for sun that SES could not answer my questions with certainty ...

In answer to your questions, you must take the essay before they will even start grading your assignment. Therefore, it is to your advantage to take your essay right after submitting. After you take the essay, they will start grading it. I don't think it is possible to fail the essay exam unless you leave questions blank. If you happen to fail the application portion, your essay exam is still vaild, and you just need to resubmit your application, but you do not have to retake the essay.

Hi Koen,

Short answer: As Daniel says, you must take the essay exam before your assignment will be marked.

Longer answer:

The answers you write in your essay exam, and your submitted assignment, are handed together to the assessor for assessment. So until you have completed your essay exam nobody will look at your assignment.

The reason for the exam is quite simple: Sun need some way to prove that you wrote the code that you submitted. The logic (as I understand it) works like this: When you go into the testing center, you must provide identification to prove who you are. You will then be asked four questions that can only be answered correctly by the person who wrote the code. If the answers you give match the code you submit then the assessor can be reasonably certain that you did write your submitted code.

Since the questions on the exam are based on the code that you wrote (for exampe: did you choose RMI or Sockets for networking) it is highly unlikely that you could fail the exam unless you didn't write the code. This appears to be Sun's view as well, as they only list the following three possible parts of the SCJD assignment:
  • Programming Assignment (CX-310-252A)
  • Essay Exam (CX-310-027)
  • Programming Assignment Resubmission (CX-310-252R)

  • If you fail some part of the assignment, then you only have to resubmit the assignment. You do not have to resit the exam.

    Regards, Andrew
