I am doing the SCJD for Java 2 Platform

Is it legal to build & submit using JDK1.5?

I found a huge bug that I wasn't able to fix using JDK1.4.2
I have now installed JDK1.5 and the problem has disappered

Yes, you can use J2SE 1.5.

Search this forum, you can find some people who worked and passed SCJD with Tiger.

You may want to slip in some Tiger features though to give a reason beyond a suspected bug in the 1.4 runtime for using 1.5

If it truly is a bug in the JDK, I think that that in itself is sufficient justification to move to another JDK.
Using the latest JDK does not need a justification anyway! But of course it is better to show off that you know how to use the new features where appropriate.

For the record, I used JDK 1.5.0 for my assignment. I used generics a lot throughout my code. I can imagine that using 1.5 and not using generics in colletions would look strange to an assessor.

By the way, if you intend to use Java 1.5 and want to learn about the new features, I can recommend the book Java 1.5 Tiger : A Developer's Notebook.

It explains to the point what the new features are and how to use them and doesn't waste any space on material that experienced Java programmer's are already familiar with.
