If it truly is a bug in the JDK, I think that that in itself is sufficient justification to move to another JDK. Using the latest JDK does not need a justification anyway! But of course it is better to show off that you know how to use the new features where appropriate.
For the record, I used JDK 1.5.0 for my assignment. I used generics a lot throughout my code. I can imagine that using 1.5 and not using generics in colletions would look strange to an assessor.
