Upload after taking the essay

Hi,

I do believe it is possible to upload your assignment after you have completed the essay. Is this true? If so, wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose of taking the essay? As you could make sure that before you upload everything is conforming to your answers given in the essay.

Thanks in advance,

William

Hi!

You need to submit your assignment before taking the essay exam.

Thanks David,

How long before taking the essay exam does the jar need to be uploaded? Or is there no minimum?

Hi!

I'm not 100% on this, but basically you can't book your exam until you have submitted your assignment. But after the assignment is submitted, you can take the test as soon as test centre can test you

Hi William,

David is correct in that the requirement is that you have to upload the assignment before you take the essay exam. There is no limit on the time between when you upload the assignment and take the exam - some Prometric sites allow bookings for the same day, so you could upload in the morning, make your booking, and do the exam in the afternoon (others have done this).

You can book your exam anytime though - even before you start work on your assignment. In fact, this is one of the things we recommend if your exam voucher is about to expire (see the JavaRanch SCJD FAQ for more information about that).

In practice Sun have been lenient with people who have sat the exam before uploading. There used to be (maybe still exists) a procedural problem where candidates have to notify Prometric that they want to upload before they can do the actual upload. Some candidates planned to do an upload on one day and do the essay the next day. Some of them then discovered that they could not do the upload, and could not change the exam date. So for this reason, Sun have allowed candidates to upload after taking the exam.

You cannot rely on this though. If the procedural problem has been fixed, then there is no reason why Sun should allow it. And if Sun believe it is being abused they will disallow it. If you do get caught with the problem where you cannot do an upload, make sure you keep your emails to Prometric to show that you did notify them of your problem.

I do believe it is possible to upload your assignment after you have completed the essay. Is this true? If so, wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose of taking the essay? As you could make sure that before you upload everything is conforming to your answers given in the essay.

True - but realisticly, if one of your answers in the essay exam is that you developed using RMI and the code you were about to submit actually uses Sockets, then you have a massive amount of code rewriting (with associated documentation) to do before submission - Sun would get really suspicious if your submission occured a week after the exam.

Hi.

That was my case.
I finished my assignment just one day before of my essay exam. Then when I tried to upload it I realize that I was no able to do it.

I wrote an email to Sun to ask for help, I was afraid!, and I had to take the exam before to upload my assignment. I did my exam without problems and 2 days after I received permissions to upload my project.

Regards

Technically you are supposed to email to request permission to upload the assignment. The site won't let you upload until you get permission.
The response giving me permission to upload took about a day to a day and a half to arrive.
To be safe, I wouldn't schedule things too close together; why give yourself extra anxiety, especially after working so hard for so long?
I would suggest:
As you get close to done, buy the essay exam and make sure you have the voucher/ticket.
Next, email the request for permission to upload and then do a final check on all of the files (format, javadoc, etc.). That actually took me a few days.
Then upload the assignment, and when the upload is successful, schedule the exam as soon as possible afterward.
Take a quick pass through the code so that you have details fresh in in you mind for the essay test.
Take the essay test.
Prepare for your new hobby: checking both of the certmananger web sites--www.certmanger.net/sun and www.certmanager.net/sun_assignment (I have heard stories of the results showing up either place--mine showed up on the sun_assignemt one first). I tried to limit myself to checking no more that every hour
