since the spec say only swing.
Can I use java.awt.Color to select color and color code fonts in the assignment?

You can use the parts of AWT that are required for Swing, such as the event listeners in java.awt.event, so java.awt.Color should be fine.

Same as previous ranchers... The constraint with the assignment is that you can only use the SWING Components. For other features (listeners...), I believe it is generally accepted on this forum that you can use classes outside of SWING as long as SWING doesn't offer the same improved classes (Button --> JButton).

I used java.awt.Color myself to display error messages in red, status messages in green, apply borders around components...

So, go ahead and do your magic
