Read method in IO

Is there any difference between read ( all three types ) methods used in InputStream,FilterInputStream and BufferedInputStream. If not, why
1. FilterInputStream overrides read methods of InputStream ?
2. BufferedInputStream overrides read methods of FilterInputStream ?
