It feels great to write in this forum today that, I am now a Sun Certified Java Programmer . Cleared my test today with 88 % . Feeling a lot relieved after so many weeks of hard work. I have been visiting this site occasionally and have found this site to be a great one for studying for the SCJP . My sincere thanks to everyone in this site who actively participate . My thanks to Maha Anna - her web site is just too good and i guess it covers everything you need for the certification . she has done a great job in guiding others . My Profile : I am Mechanical Engineer - 18 months into the software industry and Java is my first Object Oriented language and i have been seriously studying for the exam for over 4 months amidst regular office hours and the last month recovering from jaundice but i should say i enjoyed every bit of it . The Exam : The exam was quite easy ( it should after so many rounds of mock exams) - though i have answered 7 ques incorrectly i guess and sadly missed the 90% mark, the interface was clean and better than any of the mocks i have faced though tester in rhe is quite similar. i was not sure whether to give a semicolon at end of an expression or to give the opening brace for a class declaration for two of the fill in the blank ques . Sun is not 100 % clear in the instructions on this ground . I finished within one hour and revised for the next. Time is not at all a constraint . Lot of questions were pretty common as in the mock exams . i had 2 on threads 2 on garbage collection 1 on Gridbag 4-5 on AWT 3-4 on Exceptions 2-3 on IO 6-7 on declarations and access control and many on other language fundamentals and overloading / overriding My Preparation : I studied Java Complete Reference by Patrick Naughton and Herbert Schildt(a very good book) and then Core Java for my basics . Then i did RHE and Barry Boone . RHE is too good a book for the certification . Though i liked Boone too which had quite a few good examples and questions but rhe is by bar the best available . I went thru both the books twice and i used to score 95-98% in the tester in RHE . Boone's test i used to score around 85-90% I have done the Marcus Green's test which are also very good . Besides the various postings here at javaRanch really helped me out and i got links to other real good sites and tests from here . The Round Up Game here was so cool and it was real fun getting all the cows inside . The ques there gave me a good revision of my concepts . Eagerly waiting to get into Servlets,JDBC ,RMI , EJB .. My thanks once again to all the Ranch hands and all the nice people out here , my thanks to my family for support and encouragement . anyone here knows of any good jobs around ... i can code in java .if so pls mail me at arijit_kundu@hotmail.com bye Arijit
