Hi Laura,
Since u r a beginner. I suggest u read some initial Java books like "The Complete Reference" or "Java In a Nutshell" . These
books are good for start, then u could go on to the certfication books, the JLS, mock exams etc. By the time u could participate in the Javaranch discussions.
Anyways welcome to the world of java
All the Best

Laura,
I suggest that you visit other JavaRanch forums set up for beginners - Java in General(beginner) and Cattle Drive(Java College} forums. This is where you can get your doubts clarified as you progress learning Java.
Even before you start you will need the JDK stuff including the java compiler. Make sure you keep handy the Java Language Specification and the Java API Documentation.
Ofcourse once you are ready for the certification exam, there is no other place on earth that is as good and friendly as this forum( SCJP Forum ). You are more than welcome to hang around here, ask questions, get answers and have fun.
Ajith
