This week's book giveaway is in the OCAJP 8 forum. We're giving away four copies of OCA Java SE 8 Programmer I Study Guide and have Edward Finegan & Robert Liguori on-line! See this thread for details.
I took the exam this morning, and passed with a 66%. I am excited that I passed, but I was really expecting to do a LOT better. I must be an exception more so than the rule when I say the exam appeared slightly tougher than the mock exams. Most of the intermediate/hard questions dealt with specific methods of classes. The areas I was most weak on were threads, GC, and I/O, but I got an 87%, 100%, and a 90% in them. java.lang - an area I thought I knew very well - gave me the most fits ... I got something like a 15% in it. I will say that it really pays to know about how objects react when they are passed to a method and identities are "changed". Also, I got 3 fill-in questions - I believe I got them all correct. Lots of questions on overriding/overloading. One question which focused on flow-control, but the answer really had to do with something totally different. Regards, SP
Hi Stephen, Congartulations!!! You know what ?? I felt the same as you did before the test and I was quite confident of a good score, but when I started taking the test I almost became numb and cold. I found the questions much tougher than I had expected and tougher than most of the ones in the mock tests. Thankfully I managed to pass with the same score as you did , but it was a little disappointing. The longer code questions are quite tricky and they consume most of your time to figure out the right answer and in the end you are left with no time or very little time to come back to the unsure answers. I would just advise the SCJP aspirants to practise a lot of mock tests before sitting for the test and this test is almost certainly tougher than the mock tests, although I can also see some people doing well in the test. Manna - I too felt nervous going into the exam. When I read the first few questions, the nervousness almost became a panic. About midway, I started calming down. I actually went through the first pass of 59 questions in about 45 minutes. I had marked about 15 questions, and went back to answer them. After answering the marked questions, I still had about 20 minutes left, so I started from question #1 and reviewed what I had put on each question. I'm glad I did this, since I found 2 mistakes. Even after doing this, I still had about 5-6 minutes remaining, so I just ended the test. Before the exam, I was getting 95%-100% on the JavaRanch quiz game, 75%-95% on the mock exams, etc., hence my assertion that I am probably the exception, and not the rule. I felt real confident about everything in the exam except perhaps threads, GC, and I/O. As it turned out, they were the areas I did the best in. I would say that about 50% of the questions I got were similar to ones I've seen on mock exams, but the other 50% were more in-depth questions (maybe I just got un-lucky). It pays to really know the methods of classes (i.e., java.lang, java.util, etc.). Regards, SP
