Hi all, I passed the new exam with 86% on 20th Oct '00! I have no experience in C/C++! I am a powerbuilder professional. I have a special liking for Object Oriented Design and programming. Java's object oriented nature facinated me! However preparing for the exam is no joke...especially with two kids! My total preparation time was 2 to 3 hours/day for two months! The time for the new exam (90 mins) is more than sufficient for you to complete the first round and review them again. I had a tough time answering the questions based on Threads which drastically cut down my score. A hands on experience with threads, monitors, locks .etc. should help you answer those questions. 70% of the questions were based on code snippets which were quite lengthy(upto 30 lines). Questions based on Java language fundamentals were straight forward and simple. The other questions based on AWT, IO, util, Math were easy. I tried a lot of mock exams and was a frequent visitor of the JavaRanch.com. It helped me a lot. I refered the 'The Complete Java 2 Certification guide' by R&H and 'Exam Cram' by Bill Borgen. Regards, Savita

Hi Shalini,
Most of the difficult questions on Threads which I faced were centered around the Monitor, lock & Synchronization. There were code snippets which used the wait() and notify() methods in synchronized methods. The question based on those code snippets were a little confusing - like what would be the predicted result or how can you improve it to do what is expected to do or what happens if multiple threads are accessing the same method/object and so on. Basically these type of questions can be answered only if you have tried some hands on. Good Luck, Savita

Congratulations, Savita! How old are your kinds? Old enough to become certified also?
Hi all, Thank for ur wishes! Meanwhile I would like to say that my kids are not very much ready to take the exam...maybe I will wait for few more years for them to go to school before they can take their exam!

Congradulations. It a lot of hard work but you did it. You didn't know any java and you passed it by studying 2 hours a day for 2 month. Thats great.Your a very smart guy. I think I'm going to have a huge problem with the time constraint. You're saying 70% if the test has code in it up to 30 line. I don't think I can figure out a 30 line code question in 90 seconds. I'd need at least 3 minuts. Sun realy screwed me by bring down the time limit. Any way congradulation again and good luck on the developers exam.
