Feasability of Java for me

I am a Commerce Graduate and working as a senior clerk in State Government. Am a computer literate, cobol programmer, dbase programmer, have idea about VB learnt C. Can any body tell me wether I can go for JAVA directly without goging for C++. I am 39 will it be a vise idea to take-up JAVA for a better job. Please guide.
