There are about 10 moderators going to JavaOne. We're probably going to have some unofficial "official" JavaRanch thingy (e.g. dinner). Who is going to JavaOne? Do you want to try to meet other ranchers? When and how?
I'll post official unofficial times and events, as well as talks being given by ranchers, in the next week or so.

OK, just spend the entire day writing slides. Here is my presentation:
Design Patterns and Best Practices for JavaTM Technology-Based Mobile Applications
BoF-1672 Thursday Jun 12, 9:30 PM - 10:20 PM, Gateway 104, Moscone Center
A quick note: Sun put it in the advanced category. I am prepared to address an audience with little J2ME background but solid J2SE/J2EE background.
Most of the best practices and patterns are aimed to help experienced Java developers migrate their skills to mobile development arena. So, it should be of general interest to most ranchers.
Plus, I will be giving away some printed materials during the presentation. That includes four of my articles that will be featured on major publications during the JavaOne period.
So, stop by and talk with me after the presentation if you guys have time! I am open to the idea of an informal JavaRanch meeting during the conference. Just post the time in this forum or send me a private message.
cheers
Michael

But don't stick around too long at Michael's talk, because then you'll miss
JavaTM Technology in the Classroom: Teaching Finance Using Java Technology
BoF-2955 Thursday Jun 12, 10:30 PM - 11:20 PM, City, Argent Hotel
(Sorry Michael.)
I'll try to make the first half of your talk.

Cool, Mark. I will finish at 10:20pm sharp and the last couple of minutes should be Q&A. I hope 10+ minutes will be enough to walk from Moscone to Argent Hotel!
Anyway, I will try to stop by your talk if I do not get caught up after mine. Your topic sounds interesting. My wife was doing a study on using games to educate software developers (she is doing a business PhD at UT austin and she will attend JavaOne too). Maybe we can talk about it! Few speakers in JavaOne are from the academic background.

I'll be there. I'm kind of disappointed by the reports that there'll only be 6-12,000 attendees.
When I went in 2000, I got like 30 t-shirts
Anyone know if the IMAX next door will be playing Matrix Reloaded?

How is 6000 Java developers a small crowd? Anyway, I think there is an upside: Since it takes so much dedication to attend JavaOne this year, people will try to make the $$$ worth it. We might see more aggresive networking and more discussions on the technology. I am looking forward to it!

Three questions

When is it?

Sun's Convention for discussing all aspects of Java Technologies.
San Francisco California
June 10 - 13, 2003
Unfortunately they do not have provisions for 4 legged attendees .
So - no Moose at Jessica Sant and Michael Ernests "Certification" session.
No Moose at Michael Herschberg's "Teaching Finance Using Java" session.
No Moose getting a book signed by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates at the Java BookStore .
No Moose at Michael Yuan's "Design Patterns for Java Mobile Apps" .

I don't even get to meet Jim, and Cindy, And Rob, and Simon Brown, and ooooohhhhh the sorrow of it all!
So anyway, it would be nice if YOU all could go and let me know about it .

Hey! Wouldn't it be cool if a lot of JavaOne attendees were wearing cool JavaRanch t-shirts?

Better buy two because you don't want to smell bad on the last day!

Actually, JavaOne happens twice a year -- One in the SF bay area and one in Asia. Last year the Asia JavaOne is in Tokyo. There have been talks to hold a JavaOne in China or India. But Sun was worried that Chinese/Indian programmers might not be able to pay the $2000 a piece admission ticket. So, I think they will keep it in Japan for the time being to make max profit from the conference.

Hi Mark,
have you compiled the list for JavaRanch speakers and set up a time for a meeting? I am trying to set up my meeting schedules during JavaOne now.
cheers

The JavaRanch folks will be stepping out of the Big Moose Saloon, and into another saloon (yet to be determined). We'll be departing after my talk. All are welcome to join us.

I don't think that there were as many people presenting last year. BTW, I will be writing up the event on my weblog. Hopefully I will get some photos of everybody too.

Mark: That is certainly a late night gathering (3am if you are from the east coast ! But I will be there!
Don: Hope to see you next year!
Simon: Make sure you get your J2ME enabled camera phone ready! We can do some serious phone blogging from there!

Also this year there are some more bartenders and sheriffs who managed to get tickets even though we're not presenting. (E.g. me.) So we'll be showing up to heckle our friends.
