Actually, I think the certification is much more relevent now. This is for sure that the market has surplus
java programmers (including 'fake' java gurus as per their resumes). Just imagine how a manager would filter out a bunch of resumes? If I get 15 resumes (which, incidently, I got yesterday!), I definitely don't have time to interview all of them. After sorting by experience, I would most probably pick the resumes having good marks in the SCJP certification or probably resumes with
SCJD! And then I would interview may be 5-6.
When the market was up, nobody cared about the certification. Managers were getting 2 resumes for 3 positions!
These are the facts, you decide for yourself whether certification is useful or not.
